Re: if self leaves KU....
He's not leaving. He will get paid, but he's not leaving.

Re: if self leaves KU....
Personally, I think we're losing recruiting battles because of tradition, not because of the coaches. I think phog allen, and KU's traditional powerhouse status is what Appleton committed to, not Bill Self.
No reason for that, other than a hunch of mine.

Add in the fact that he would be going to his alma mater he would be an idiot not to take it.
Yes, KU is going to give him a new contract, but I highly doubt their intentions are to make Bill Self the highest paid college(not just MBB) coach in the good ol US of A. I did think he would be an idiot to leave, but $$$$ talk and noone talks louder then Boone Pickens right now.
Another interesting story in that interview. Apparently some years back Pickens made a gift of $120 million to OSU's Athletic department. They turned around and gave it back and told him to invest it for them. Now he has returned their money plus earnings and it comes to $300 million now. I wish I had half that return.
Pickens must be one of those types who eats pennies and craps out $100 dollar bills....... -
Re: if self leaves KU....
We've lost recruiting battles to a lot of other places than KU. That isn't the only problem.

Re: if self leaves KU....
Cyclonerules91, you beat me too it. I heard the same interview. If your ala mater is offering unprecidented money it would be VERY tough to turn that down. That's both job and financial security. Not that winning a national title at Kansas is not going to net you a raise and job security but if he wants to go home now is the chance because that offer may not be there later.

So were you like me and just waiting for Cotlar to ask the guy he was interviewing what the chances were that Drake would be there within 4yrs? I thought for sure something would come up about the Bulldogs.
I also think the guy said that he could see KU at best doubling his salary to $2.75 million / yr but that is still a far cry from $40 million guaranteed money from home.

Re: if self leaves KU....
I seem to remember reading somewhere, maybe here, that OSU was one of the universities asking their elderly alums or supporters to make the university a beneficiary under their life insurance policies? Do you suppose the mortality rate of OSU alumni is growing?

Re: if self leaves KU....
Isn't T-Bone an oil man? If so it's not too hard to figure out how he's tripled OSU's investment in recent years. He obviously has money to burn and can promise Self anything and everything he could ever want, and since OSU is his alma mater, I think he's gone. I'm surprised Cotlar didn't say that Kansas would no doubt have that hall of fame coach Keno at the top of their list if Self leaves.

If the Kansas coach goes out and plays a round of golf alone, is he playing with him Self?

Re: if self leaves KU....
too bad that 120 mil a few years ago probably had more buying power than the 300 mil in todays economy
