Am I the only one who misses Steve Alford?

You can watch him every night on Nick at Nite.

PG - Moderate ISU. Garrett is simply a better player than Jeff Peterson
SG - Slight Iowa. I'll take Staiger over Freeman personally, but Freeman has done it in front of both fans in Iowa City, while Staiger hasn't played for ISU yet.
SF- Extreme ISU. Wesley Johnson is better at 3 different positions than anything Iowa has at those three positions. At the small forward spot, it isn't even close.
PF- Extreme ISU. Iowa simply does not have a big capable of competing with Brackins inside. Tate ended the season on a good note, but he is no where near the athlete, shooter, shot blocker, etc etc that Brackins is.
C- Slight ISU. Neither team has anything proven here, so it would be hard to debate this spot. However, give the likelihood that we will see Brackins here on occasion, and JVB is in the fold, I'll give ISU a slight edge.
I think it's a lot closer than that and I don't think we'll win in IC next year. Mostly because I think the lineups will be different.

PG - Freeman over Buckley/Garrett
SG - Gatens and Lucca have to really be a push right now - similar body types and neither have played a collegiate game.
SF - I am taking Wesley over Kelly by a sizable margin though. He showed flashes last year but the guy is a fouling machine.
PF - Brackins in an edge over Cole. Cole should be able to provide a tough rebounding battle for Craig.
C - Tate should also be a tough challenge for the VDB/Thompson combo.

The teams really aren't that different especially when you factor in the home court advantage.

When four of their class were wing guards (plus Fuller--and I think Fuller might be another Wes), and have Kelly returning, so many at one spot is a waste.

Only problem is that Tate/Cole is it. Get one in foul trouble, and it'll be all over. Or are you counting on David Palmer? Certainly not that big stick Brommer? Or be playing a four guard lineup--with several of them being glacially slow?

Freeman is going to be their shooting guard next season. Jeff Peterson will most likely be their starting PG. Cole can give Brackins a good math-up on the glass, yes, but there is no other category Cole is even close to Brackins in. I agree, and said as much, that the 5 spot will be a close match-up.

Rumor is Jeff Peterson is transferring which would put Freeman back to PG.

As far as Cole, I like his intensity more so than Craig's. Craig has better skills but he needs to get meaner!!

Agreed about Brackins. We need the Brackins we saw the last few games of the season for all of 08-09.

Wonder where Peterson is going to transfer to? I thought he was going to make a good PG for them.

Good question. Peterson started the year well but his minutes declined when he struggled in Big 10 play. I know he got frustrated. As of right now it is just a rumor. He is still working out with the team, but so was Tyler Smith at this time last year.

I would go with:

Coaching: ISU. Only b/c Lick shows absolutely no emotion and his role in the Big 10 network commercial was horrible. He talks too monotone...

Fans: Extreme ISU, hands down.

Re: ISU vs Iowa MBB match-ups

Well, considering if Iowa has the fan support show up to their games like they did last year (which was near non-existent), our road game in Iowa City should be pretty much neutral AT WORST!

My Roman Villas:
Friley-Godfrey (-66|126)
Helser-Woodrow (-61|122)
Roberts-Harriman (-74|133)
Welch-Ayres (-73|133)

Re: ISU vs Iowa MBB match-ups

SouthernHawk made a good point. It would be hard to pick one over the other at this point, but I would say that things slightly favor ISU.

However, it depends on how many of Iowa's players end up in trouble with the law too.

This is a typical class for L-liter. He runs a lot of one post - 4 wings. His last team at Butler started a 6-6 and a 6-7 forward along with 3 wing/combo guards. A 4th wing guard actually played more minutes than the 6-7 forward did. It remains to be seen if he can be successful in the big ten with that style and size of players.

Honestly, I don't see how people can be excited about VDB but then call Brommer a "Big Stick". Both have similar body builds (Brommer actually has put on 10 pounds since his final game in high school, so he's 6-9, 225 pounds right now).

But, honestly, it's Cole, Tate, and Brommer. I agree with Palmer - nothing going there.

Excellent post.

I'll say that I think he can win in the BT with those types of players. His Butler team beat Big Ten teams (and other BCS teams) on a semi-regular basis. We'll just have to see if that can hold up week after week.

ISU Student - Iowa fan. Best of both worlds.
