Credits: 138,989 | Why are we so excited about Vanderbeken Honestly, I am not impressed with him at all. He will be another Thompson as most, and I seriously doubt he will beat Thompson for minutes.
Although for some reason he participated the Juco all star game, he is not a juco all american 1st team. he is a second team, he is not a 3rd team. he is not EVEN an honorable mention!!!! In Rivals, he was only listed as 53nd best Juco.
I know some of you will say he fills a hole in the front for us next year, he will let others to play their natural role, etc. but that holds ONLY if he is a quality contributor, but I doubt he will be.
Some will say never to trust these recuiting gurus, but come on, are we better than them? Yes you can not say a 2nd best player is definitely better than a 5th best player, but in most cases, they donnot mistaken a 5th best player with a 53nd best juco player.
In cyclones recent history, both Vorman and Tim Barns were top 10 Jucos, Evans was a second team juco all american, so does Staples.
When was the last time in cyclone history that a top 50 juco player makes a impact? I don;t remember that we even recuited a top 50 juco in LE time. Althoug LE was considered a bad recuiter. |

I am excited about what I believe Greg can do with him.

Disappears at times. But I do think he will be better defensively than Jiri was when he first got here. I think he is stronger than Jiri was.
Remember JVB was a high major recruit coming out of high school IN CANADA. If you are good enough to get noticed in canada than you are probably a pretty decent player. Let's just delete from our memory that he committed to the Hawks. Stevey boy doesn't have the greatest track record for having an eye for talented big men. |

I'm not better than the recruiting gurus. However, if he didn't think he would compete with Thompson than I highly doubt McDermott would have recruited him.
I also don't think I'm better at judging talent than our basketball coach either. And I don't make assumptions about his basketball ability without seeing him play.
Jiri wasn't highly rated either but he was our only All-Big 12 player last year. |

. I had a hard time following you here cheng...is he or is he not a 2nd teamer? Also, how many times have you seen him play and what are your qualifications for evaluating him? Some major programs were after him and I don't think they were probably scraping the bottom of the barrel so even though I haven't seen him play and don't know a lot about him I feel pretty good about signing him. The more big bodies the better...and it seems to me that UCONN has produced a few decent posts the last several years and they wanted him badly.

I've spent time in foreign countries where communicating and fitting in is difficult, and it's not fun to not be able to clearly get across what you want to say.

I don't know how badly they wanted him due to the fact that they never offered him a scholarship. But yes they were recruiting him. |
