I would certainly place him towards the top of our list but there are quite a few marquee players that we're hanging with right now. I think you have to look at his ability from day one if he were to go to ISU and realize that he would probably compete for a starting role right away.
Who are these maquee players (that we have a shot at)? Only one I can think of is Thames, and I'm not as excited about him. This is purely from highlight videos, but I would definately make Buycks my first option.

OK, count me as one who doesn't quite get this offer. If you look at the backcourt members for next fall, Garrett, Boozer, Staiger and Lee will be JRs (in Buyck's class). In the next class, there is Buckley, Christopherson and Eikmeier. This just doesn't make a lot of sense to me. Why not go SF?

Maybe they think Buycks can play the 3 as well. Maybe they think we can get him as well.

Besides, I have no problem going with a three guard lineup that can shoot.

Apparently we always have openings with our turnover ratio.

Without WJ, we may not have a true 3 on our roster until...(dare I say it)...2010
Buycks is a scorer and we need scorers. I really hope we get this guy. Finishing second again would...suck.

In the last 20 years, ISU has only had two wing players I can think of who were just oozing with talent: Jeff Grayer and Wesley Johnson and not much in between. Rahshon Clark was solid but not great. We still had some very good teams during those "in between" years. As I mentioned earlier, Shawn Bankhead was our SF on Tim Floyd's best team. Larry Eustachy didn't even have a SF on his best team (instead three guards: Tinsley, Horton and Nurse).
I like the shooting ability and ballhandling ability of the guys we're bringing in and going after. Maybe we'll even see a 4-guard lineup like Baylor used. For as much talent as WJ had, he never impressed me with his ability to put the ball on the floor or to pass it. I would take Buycks if he's still interested.

I think you could look at Buycks as somebody that could play the 3 at times and be very complimentary to the other players on the court.

A program isn't built on one player and it doesn't succeed because of one player, thus a program won't fail if it doesn't get that one player. |

Besides, I have no problem going with a three guard lineup that can shoot. What he said. You don't need a true small forward in college basketball to be successful. If coaches think he's good enough that he'll start from day one over the guys that we have, then we need him.

Hasn't Mac come out and said 2/3 is basically the same position to him, just opposite spots on the floor? Or am I nuts?

Besides, I have no problem going with a three guard lineup that can shoot. Remember the last team Iowa State had that went with a three-guard lineup? If I recall correctly, it was Tinsley, Nurse, and Horton at the guards with Fizer and either Rancik or Shirley at the other post spot. I'd say that worked out all right. | | |

Stevie Johnson was the fifth starter. Rancik was out all season with an injury, and Shirley was out for a good part of the season.

Hopefully Lucca can be like Fred. Dwight
