wow..this blows... good luck to him.. he was awesome...
| Iowa State: Anyone who's a true college basketball fan needs to see a game at Hilton Coliseum. Nice is in the DNA of Iowans and the fans here are particularly gracious -- even when the home team loses but gives a great effort, they are appreciative. ESPN.com picked Hilton Coliseum as the "Hot Arena" in the Big 12...coaches in the league noted that, "regardless of talent, the Cyclones have a home court like no other." |

A head coach is rarely blindsided by an assistant leaving. It's the nature of the business and I'm betting McDermott either saw this coming and had time to plan or simply has a working list of possible replacements for all of his assistants.

Known since day one at ISU...unwritten rule among coaches to help find your assistances, head coaching jobs.

I wouldn't have a problem if McD loses a top assistant every year or two. It would mean that he is doing something right plus it never hurts to establish an extended coaching tree. It's good publicity in addition to providing a source of potential replacements down the road.

Something to keep in mind....If an assistant has connections, and he leaves, those connections are still there; part of the head coaching responsiblility.

IMO, it can happen, just not every year.

I don't want to play the race card but I'm going to. I think Iowa State needs to hire a black assistant coach with some East coast ties. ISU needs to pull some recruits from that talent rich region ala Wayne Morgan.

I does suck that he is leaving but I wonder what the rationale for going to a smaller school with less basketball interest.
