Re: Coach Prioleau/Barnes

My observation is that that assistant coaches tend to move around. This shouldn't be that big a surprise? By all accounts, Jean was a very capable assistant who the players liked, but there are plenty of other people like that out there looking for a chance. I'm sure Greg will find a quality replacment.

Glad this happened after signing period.

I agree people change jobs every day, but I wonder if TCU is a better job. The Big XII versus, well I guess I don't even know what conference TCU is in. I guess he has his reasons, I just hope there isn't turmoil in the program.

Why would Mac have his top assistant not have ties to himself? I can't compute.

As far as "programs" go, it was most definitely a step down from MU to ISU.

Re: Coach Prioleau/Barnes

Ron Smith was Director of Basketball operations and Ben Jacobson was the top assistant at UNI (which is why he is the head coach there now).

As far as Barnes goes, I've seen nothing to make me change my original opinion: He's ISU's to lose...unless some MAJOR teams come calling. And by major, I mean KU, UK, UCLA, NC or Duke.

Do or do not, there is no try .....Yoda

Re: Coach Prioleau/Barnes

One of the things I always felt that hurt some of our coaches (i.e. Floyd and Eustachy) was when they lost top flight assistants. Floyd once told me "I can coach, I need assistants that can recruit!" Clearly, replacing top flight assistants is part of the head coaching job. Just like good AD's, they should have a list of potential replacement coaches in mind. I understand that part of the NCAA championship week is the rampant interviewing, er..."networking" that goes on. Connections, we need coaches with connections.

I think the only fear of losing Barnes is to a major power. They will come calling. It's a valid fear.

No one would have said that a few years ago. I still don't believe it is true now. Yes, Marquette has had more success recently and they have some history with Al Maguire. But they've only been to one Final Four since 1977 and didn't even belong to a major conference until the Big East came calling a few years ago after losing several of their teams.

Uhh... you just made the point there... we have been to zero final fours, and they won it all in 1977. I'd say Memphis is a better program right now too and they are in a mid major conference as well. Nobody outside of a Cyclone fan would say that we are a stronger program right now than Marquette. There is nothing wrong with that either - they've been a really solid program.

Re: Coach Prioleau/Barnes

No doubt that Marquette did a lot more than ISU back in the 1960s and 1970s, but their recent history is comparable to ISUs. I guess I just don't think of Marquette as a powerhouse anymore. They just lost their head coach to Indiana, they hired an unproven assistant coach, and their average attendance is comparable to ISU's. Yes, they are a very good program. I'd rank them and ISU both somewhere in the 25-35 range nationally. Maybe they are a few notches ahead of ISU right now, but that's not enough for me to say that ISU is "definitely a step down" from Marquette. ISU has been down the last few years, but you can't discount our fan support. In fact, I'd be willing to bet that ISU will have a better record than Marquette in 2008/2009.

First off - you'd be the ONLY person putting ISU in the top 35 of programs nationally. Since Tinsley left ISU has finished an average of 8th in the Big 12.

I'd be willing to take the second bet as they still have James and a bunch of good guards and recruits coming in. I hope I'm wrong though.
