Re: Wesley's Ankle Broken all season

I think this would have to explain his sudden three-pointers. That was his whole repertoire, once he was down to one leg.

It has to explain the defense, also. I just can't imagine playing basketball on one good leg, as a wing player/guard. As he said in the article, "It's hard when your 41-inch vertical is down to 20, and you see guys going over you for rebounds that shouldn't, and going past you that shouldn't." (rough quote from a tired man)

If anyone on the team next year feels that things are too hard, let them talk to Wes. Officially one of the toughest people that I have seen play.

As long as they didn't twist his ankle.

Get it? Twist his ankle? He had a broken ankle. So instead of twisting his arm I said twist his ankle.

Could you be a little more clear on this?

What is your medical degree in? I fully believe that with swelling and such that this relatively rare situation was obscured. From what I know the ISU medical group, particularly with regard to orthopedics is quite good. It is really easy for us all to make assumptions when we dont really have a basis in knowing what we are really talking about. No offense, but come on, it was an unfortunate situation that has a resolution.

This was in reply upthread to a couple of comments slamming our medical staff. I didnt post the link, sorry

I think the group feeling is that the guy lost half his jumping ability, his quick takeoff step, etc and was not improving healthwise. That may be a major indicator that something was wrong with the foot. If the foot belongs to a valuable component of a team that needs good players, additional sleuth work may have been needed before the bruise cleared up. Maybe that is just me thinking too hard...

Who's to say the deep bone bruise wouldn't have caused the same symptoms? Also, maybe they did all they could short of cutting him open.

If this happened to a non-athlete, the doctor would order rest and they'd look at it again after the bruise cleared up. Wes never took the time to have the bruise clear up.

There probably would be no disagreement if the article mentioned who looked at the injury last December. I'm guessing that it was the very same Dr Greenwald who found the problem this spring. He is very highly regarded and does the evaluation/surgeries on almost all of the ISU related orthopedic injuries.

This does go a long ways towards explaining the weaknesses we saw in his game last year. I can't imagine trying to move quickly and laterally on defense with a broken ankle. The decrease in jumping ability would put a major damper on rebounding and shot blocking. It would also make it much harder to get off the turn-around jumper that Wesley was so good at his freshman season. It would also affect his quickness with regards to driving and cutting on offense.

Obviously everything can't be attributed to the broken ankle, but that sure does explain a lot. That leaves me optimistic that Wesley will be much improved next year. Even with one leg he was still a good player.

We have reasons for Rashon, Jiri, and Wesley. Any more health issues out there?

I believe Haluska was having a problem with a hang nail early in the season.

I personally don't have one...why do you ask?

However, I do have some common sense that leads me to express two points:

1) Doctors, even "good" ones, are human beings and as such are subject to making mistakes.

2) Everybody always thinks "their doctor is fantastic and has a great reputation"...I cannot ever recall anyone telling me about their "lousy" doctor and I do not ever recall a sports organization, pro or college, say anything other than "we have the very best medical staff"...again the reality is that everyone is not superior...the bell curve applies even to doctors.

I cheer for two teams, Iowa State and whoever is playing the hawkeyes.

Re: Wesley's Ankle Broken all season

A friend of mine tripped and at first was diagnosed with a broken foot, although later found out the radiologist failed to get back to him that it was a deep bone bruise. Doctors told him the pain is about the same but the bruise would take longer to heal. He was off work (independent contractor) for five weeks when he received the correct reading. At the time the doctor told him not to work on a break as he might do more damage, but with a bruise he wouldn't damage it if he worked as long as he could tolerate the pain.

Wes is lucky not to really tore up his ankle.
