DMRegister: ISU interested in Freeman

There's nothing in the story to corroborate it, but their top headline under sports on their website says we are.

Imagine the uproar. Iowa City just might fold in upon itself.

I don't think we have any scholarships do we?

He's a tough guy to say no to for a team that couldn't score at all last year. Like I mentioned on my blog, the scholarship situation is interesting, but I also wouldn't be surprised to see more player defections, so who knows.

I saw the headline, read the article--not a thing mentioned in there about the good guys.

Exaggeration is a BILLION times worse than understating.

Didn't McD tell AT that he might have to give his schollie up if they needed to use it for someone else? Or was that a different player that I'm thinking of?

That can't be legal.

freeman is by most accounts a good kid and good teammate. he was iowas only scorer this year. i am really shocked lickliter let him go. iowa could not score except for freeman. a coach has delusions of grandeur if he thinks freeman was the cause of his problems. they will be worse next year.

Having to sit out a year, it's tough to see where Freeman would fit in with Garrett and Buckley as junior and sophomore. He would certainly add depth to the position though.

"We have gone forth from our shores repeatedly over the last hundred years and we've done this as recently as the last year in Afghanistan and put wonderful young men and women at risk, many of whom have lost their lives, and we have asked for nothing except enough ground to bury them in, and otherwise we have returned home to seek our own, you know, to seek our own lives in peace, to live our own lives in peace." I'm guessing the conversation went something like...

Rutter: Hey Tony, you still looking for a school?
Freeman: Yup.
Rutter: Any chance you'd consider coming here as a walk-on?
Freeman: Not likely.
Rutter: Well let us know if you change your mind.
Freeman: Will do.

Sure it is -- all athletic scholarships are for one year at a time. There's usually an assumption that they'll be automatically renewed but they don't have to be. Tim Floyd ran scholarship players off all the time if he found someone better to come in and take their place. As I recall when Alex Thompson transferred, McDermott made it clear that there may or may not be a scholarship for him after the first year.

Personally, I am not impressed with Alex' work ethic, hustle, or toughness. We don't need a 6'10" guy standing at the arc looking for the 3ball. I wouldn't mind giving Freeman his scholarship; Alex has already gone through 2 high schools and 2 colleges and burned his redshirt year, so what's he going to do about it? The worst he can do is quit the team which would not even be a noticeable loss.

I'm not sure how Freeman would fit in with our team, but more depth in the form of an experienced senior and pretty solid outside shooter is never a bad thing. And it'd be fun to watch him stick it to Iowa on the court in 2010.
