I have attached the latest scholarship chart. I have removed WJ and that leaves an odd 2 yr gap for that scholarship. If not filled, I guess it could go back to Petey or Haluska. But even then, you leave 1 yr with no one using it (perhaps a new walk-on earns it).
I guess I would prefer to see it filled with a 2 yr JC for this coming season. I don't really see the risk at this point (except perhaps academic if we aren't careful) since otherwise the ship just goes to a walk-on. I'm not suggesting that our walk-ons haven't earned a scholarship but if they already were thinking they were paying their own way, bring in a 2 yr JC that, hopefully, can contribute some minutes where most needed.
The scholarship will more than likely go to Petey this year as he is the captain and returning starter. We are not going to get a quality JUCO player at this point. I say you go out there and recruit your ***** off for 2 quality players for next year.

But, if you look at the chart, we would only have 1 yr of scholarship to offer one recruit for 09-10. Do you just bring someone in anyway and assume it will work out due to someone leaving etc. like it always seems to? Or do you bring a recruit in and tell them "we have an 09-10 scholly. Then you pay for a yr. Then you get a scholarship again." Tough sell to a quality player.

IMO we only sign one, since that would mean we would have no open schollies for '10 after Harrison.

Good point. Didn't look at the chart. See this is the point I was trying to make when we signed 7 guys this year. GMAC really got himself into a mess by doing that. We can only sign 1 guy next year. Even if somebody decides to transfer, it usually is not until the spring and by then you are recruiting scraps. When you start spending time recruiting players that are leftovers, it takes away from time you can be recruiting the best prospects.

I would say that the McD seat is getting warmer. He is heading into Yr 3. He needed to fill his roster to win NEXT year, and not 2 or 3 years from now. So he did that with the best spring could offer. When he did that, though, he didn't know WJ was going to bail. Now, it is looking like next year will be another down year despite filling out the roster and leaving only one scholarship to restock with the best of 2009. Hindsight is 20/20.
Every year we do this - try to project scholarships for the next few years. And every time it turns out that we have more scholarships open than we thought, for whatever reason.
Why would we bank a scholarship when we need immediate help and the chances are good that we will have scholarships open when we need them anyways...
have you ever got caught outside In a strong rainfall? Yes or NO. If it"s yes, then you might half felt the pane of hard(tought) rain on you head. If it hurt"s then it"s tough. Yes or no. Okay I'm right and you know it.
So alothough you attempt"ed to say you didn"t understnad, now you do. Fair enough?

Sorry, but I have two words why we would bank that scholarship almost certainly: Harrison Barnes!

That is why we need to get a Juco guy in this year like Reese.
I am not so sure you get someone just to get one though. You target the 3 best remaining players left and if you can't get one to come to play 3/4 position then you give it to a walkon.
Make sure you don't call the charge. But make sure you call the foul on the scrum....
Is this scholly that Wes is giving up not bankable? I'm not well versed in such matters.
I'm not sure what you mean by "bankable"...but my understanding is that you get a certain number of scholarships each year to hand out. If you choose to not use one this year it does not "rollover" to next year (to use cell phone lingo). I'm not positive but I think that is how it works.
I cheer for two teams, Iowa State and whoever is playing the hawkeyes.

I'm certainly no expert....but that would be my interpretation as well.
