I think some people on here (including myself) who portray Greg's relationship with his players as negative need to read this:

Q: I know you still talk to assistant coach T.J. Otzelberger, and I understand you and McDermott stay in touch, too.

A: Yeah, McDermott and I, every now and then we'll talk on the phone, although more and more we communicate through text messaging. This week I called him, though, so he could actually hear my voice. I thought that was important. I reached out to him to let him know I'm here for him if he needs anything. And I hope he knows I'd like our relationship to continue to grow.
When I was at Iowa State I really felt like he cared for me off the court much more than he cared about anything I could do for him on the court. That's why I called him this week. I wanted to be there for him like he was there for me.

That's an awesome comment on Mike's part. I think that would be part of the reason Mac was so surprised and broken up by this week's events. Seems like the man tries, and this one snuck right by him.
