A friend of mine thought of this at work one night this week. What if it somehow turned out that Wesley had been out of touch with everybody, and someone else had started this with no knowledge on his part. Like a saboteur from another program, or the Chameleon from Spider-Man. Someone had taken his place, or kept him out of contact.
Wes shows up in Ames this week, people look at him "funny" when he moves back into his apartment, and he has no idea any of this happened.
My friend was bored. He was creating a wild scenario that would make the whole thing seem different.
That was the idea with suspending disbelief. It's not really plausible, unless ISU was living in a comic book, movie, or some other source of pop fiction.
