Re: ISU MBB Commitment - Gillstrap
Hey guys,
First, the story on gocyclones is updated with quotes and info from Gillstrap, Kantrail Horton and Jay Powell, the coach at Gulf Coast. Read it here: Mid-Iowa Newspapers - Cyclone basketball gets verbal commitment
Second, I don't think you need to worry about any old knee problems with either Marquez or Scott. Scott is still working through old injuries, but with the year on the scout team should get the rest he needs and be able to contribute. Watching him at Cap City, he really is a much more promising player than I think a lot of people give him credit for. And almost two years will be plenty of time for a complete rehab.
Also, Marquez told me he has no knee problems to speak of. He broke his leg, and was struggling with the rehab because it was very stressful, but has refocused on basketball and says he feels no pain while playing.
Anyway, I'll have a third version of the story in tomorrow's Tribune; it should be online by 11 or noon.

Courtney, please explore the possibility that ISU intends to appeal to the NCAA to grant Marquez an additional year of eligibility. It appears a chief question that many of we fans have, is he one and done without question, or is there a chance? . . .
I understand, iirc, that from the first day of enrollment, a student-athlete has five years to complete four years of competition. For Marquez, this appears to add up: 2005-06, freshman year; 2006-07 and 2007-08, out of school; 2008-09, GCCC; 2009-10, ISU. That's five years (I think, I'm counting on my fingers ;-)
What are the prospects another year might be granted, considering his injury and overall circumstances?
Thanks much.

Re: ISU MBB Commitment - Gillstrap
ISU could appeal to the NCAA for his previous year not to count towards his traditional limit on 5 to play 4 - he would essentially get 6 to play 4 and could have two years at ISU. It's always a crap shot and you just hope for the best. If Wesley had only played a few games last year and sat out with an injury the rest of the season, it's the same thing the staff would have attempted.
A program isn't built on one player and it doesn't succeed because of one player, thus a program won't fail if it doesn't get that one player. -

There's no reason not to appeal, is there?
Yeah, we gotta assume the staff will shoot for it. Just wondering, I guess, if Marquez's situation looks as though he has a decent chance or a poor chance to successfully get a sixth season.
But, as we all know, attempting to figure out how the NCAA goes about its business is not a day in the park.
Hey, Coach Robinson, congrats! on landing your first recruit for the Cyclones.

Thats exactly why I think if he had stayed in school and tried to stick it out, he would get the waiver no question. Because he quit school altogether, I can't see a favorable ruling here...

Re: ISU MBB Commitment - Gillstrap
what do we do if he gets a second yr & Christopher stays and plays all his yrs? Won't we be short on schollies for 2010? (aka will we still have one for a "certain" player if he decides to stay in Ames?)

We need to hire Jess Settles attorney to argue this case.

Re: ISU MBB Commitment - Gillstrap
I really don't think the coaching staff would go after him if they didn't truly believe he was capable of playing some big-time minutes and that he would most likely be granted another year. I just can't imagine that they haven't given him a thorough up and down considering everything involved. The staff has had some bad breaks and bad luck but they're still incredible judges of talent and I trust the fully.

This happened to one of my gymnast friends in college. She competed two years, was too injured to continue, but still was able to finish out school on a scholly.

Re: ISU MBB Commitment - Gillstrap
There is an appeal process to get a 6th year of eligibility - Jess Settles and Tony Yelk are examples.
I believe the appeal can not be made to the NCAA until after the player has completed 5 years. I also think the NCAA only approves it for players who have missed 2 years due to injury.
