He also mentioned that if you look at the future FB schedules, you won't see many top teams in there, non-conf.
And I think you're right about the economics angle. He did say that BCS schools are keeping as many home games as they can. Obviously for revenue. But all he really said about us is that they "don't want to come to Ames". Could be a variety of reasons. Hilton, away game, expense. Probably a combination of all.
He kept flipping back and forth between MBB and FB, so it was very confusing which schedule he was addressing at any point. So I took it to mean he was applying the philosophy of cupcakes for wins and fans want wins more than competition, to both sports. I, personally, would love to see this!

I cheer for two teams, Iowa State and whoever is playing the hawkeyes. -
Re: Schedule is out
I don't have a problem with our non conference football schedule. We get enough big names schools every year with Iowa, Nebraska, Texas, Oklahoma, etc. It would be nice once in awhile to throw in a Florida State game like we did a few years ago. As was mentioned a specific number of wins gets you to a bowl game and with a shorter season there is less room for error.
But I have to think in basketball playing a few quality non-conference games would only help our teams to get better prior to entering the conference season. The conference is a grind and playing cupcakes from November to early January does not get you ready for your first conference game at Texas. Where as Texas has St. Joe's, Notre Dame, Indiana, UCLA, Villanova, Michigan State, Arkansas and Wisconsin. Who do you think will be ready for Big 12 play?

I'm not cracking on you but this really made me laugh...shorter season...everyone plays 12 regular season games every year now...and if you are in a conference with a championship game that you make and then you go to your bowl game...voila...you have played 14 games. No such thing as a shorter season in CFB anymore.

Re: Schedule is out
My last comment on this for a while - here are the RPI's from last season for the teams we play:
UC Davis: 303
Loyola Marymount: 308
UW-Milwaukee: 178
Hawaii: 271
Miss. Valley State: 228
UNI: 131
Oregon State: 269
Drake: 10
Iowa: 192
Jacksonville State: 339
SDSU: 330
Houston: 80
Mercer: 316
SIU-Edwardsville: No RPI - reclassified to D1 this season
Houston Baptist: No RPI - reclassified to D1 this season
If those teams kept their RPI's consistent for this season their average RPI would be 227.31. I think it's safe to say that some teams will obviously drop like Drake and other teams will obviously get better, but also SIU-Edwardsville and Houston Baptist are probable to have RPI's in the 250-300 range. I'd say the average RPI of our nonconference opponents stands a real chance of being in the 250 range.
The problem with this is even if we come out of it with a decent record we will easily have the worst SOS in the Big 12 and thus our RPI will be terrible. I can't think the players won't be a little shocked with they head to UT to play their first Big 12 game. There are 5 teams on that schedule with RPI's greater than 300 and two D1 transitioning teams.
Fans do want to see wins but they also want to see good teams and have our team in a position for postseason play. Unless the administration thinks we're completly naive this schedule is taking us nowhere. If wins are the end all be all let's just schedule all CIML teams, they'd play on the cheap and we could probably take them. Wait, HB is in the league, nevermind.
