ISU 3pt Shooting
This is still way too early in the season to look at stats but I couldn't help myself. Currently ISU ranks 6th nationally with 3pt's made with 31. Some teams have played 4 games to our 3. Which makes me excited, but also how balanced our makes have been between players. So looking at the top 8 teams in the country with 3pt's made and braking them down to how many each player has accounted for. With accuracy percentage as well.
UNC-Wilmington 40 11-9-6-4-3-3-3-1 39.6%
Virginia Military 35 10-7-5-4-3-3-2-1 37.2
Clemson 34 11-7-5-5-3-2-1 42.5
UW-Milwaukee 33 9-7-6-6-4-1 (who we beat) 36.7
Davidson 32 13-8-7-4 36.0
Iowa State 31 8-6-5-4-3-3-1-1 42.5
Houston 30 14-7-5-2-2 35.7
Miss. St 30 9-8-6-3-2-1-1 44.1
What encourages me is that it looks like ours is more of a balanced attack compared to other teams, which makes us much more difficult to guard.
Although I could be wrong since I haven't been able to get to a game yet this year.

Re: ISU 3pt Shooting
Nice job! Let's hope they keep it going. Also I think we play Houston too.

Added the percentages as well. Notice we are among the highest accuracy as well.

Re: ISU 3pt Shooting
Drake was 15-27 the other night and 43.8% on the year. We could see alot of three balls in that game...

Re: ISU 3pt Shooting
The question is whether ISU will be able to get the open looks, get those shots off, and maintain the good 3pt % against the better athletes and tougher defenses of the Big 12. If they can, ISU may be the surprise of the conference.

This isn't exactly elite company. Living by the three is usually a place for the underdogs. I hope we can turn that around.

Although I could be wrong since I haven't been able to get to a game yet this year. We have a less balanced attack than these teams: We are averaging 69.0 points per game.
UNC Wilmington - 101 ppg
Virginia Military - 108.7 ppg
Clemson - 84.3 ppg
Davidson - 94.7 ppg
Houston - 80.5 ppg
UW-Milwaukee, Miss St, are closer to our amounts.
The point I'm making is that we're throwing up as many threes as teams that are averaging 80+ points per game, so we are less balanced than these teams.... These teams are scoring between 50 and 70 points from inside the arc; we're only scoring 39...

Re: ISU 3pt Shooting
Adding Eikmeyer was good. The kid is a shooter. Before the season, I said that he was going to be the "sleeper." All our guards just need to keep hitting shots....and taking smart 3's at that.... We need some consistancy out there this year, will open some things up for the bigs down low too.
Keep it positive this year guys....Go Clones!

McD seems to want long possessions with a smart shot on offense which is going to lower the score. Also, McD stresses defense so we shouldn't need 100 points just to win.
You bring up a good point. I'm just trying to put a positive spin on it.

That's true. I guess what I was trying to say is that these teams are leaders in 3 pointers because they shoot a ton of shots total.
Since we are a slower, more methodical team, we don't need to score 80+, but we will need to find other ways to score when we aren't knocking down 3s...

Also, Iowa State is playing better defense than any of those teams which is making our opponents work harder for a shot. Both of those facts add up to fewer possessions per game which equate to fewer shots taken and made per game.
UNC-Wilmington maybe be scoring 101 per game but they're also giving up 105 per game.
Iowa State is taking fewer shots than all of those teams but they're taking good shots. It's not like they're running down the clock each possession and just throwing up a three. They're running the offense and taking what the defense is giving them. So far the first three teams have been clogging the lane and forcing Iowa State to beat them from outside. Luckily we have the personnel to do that this season. Also, our leading scorer is a post player. All of those other teams have guards as leading scorers. Iowa State has a nice balance of inside and outside scoring. They're going to be tough for teams to stop.
I'm excited for this season because Iowa State appears to have so many weapons on offense and they're playing great team defense so far.
I don't think I'm alone when I say I'd like to see more and more planets fall under the ruthless domination of our solar system. -
Re: ISU 3pt Shooting
Hopefully, we can keep up this 3-point production for a little longer. Then the teams will scout us as a 3-point shooting team, and open the paint giving us more opportunity to score inside.
