    Re: What a heartbreaker!!!!

I didn't realize that the Brackins foul was so ticky tacky. HOWEVER, I agree that we shouldn't even be in the position to throw this game away. If Brackins hits both free throws down the stretch, we have OT at a minimum given the same cirumstances. Poor shooting and poor rebounding are what ulitimately cost us the game.

Another issue for the year: When is Brackins going to grow a pair start playing some power basketball around the hoop. Is that what McD is teaching him? The fade away 5 foot turn-around shot is a bad shot.

Bad call or not, the fact that we were only up by 1 at Hawaii speaks volumes to how bad we really played last night. We deserved to lose.

I remember posters after last season talk about how Brackins will "put on 20 pounds in the weight room, and come back and be a beast" around the basket.
Well, it's not that easy. His body looks the same as last year, and his mentality is the same too. He doesn't like physical contact, and you can't change that fact.

Does the BB team use the same lifting coach as FB? Seems like our guys are always a little skinny. Last real banger we had was Homan.

I agree with this to a point. I was disappointed he wasn't stronger. I think it'll click eventually, though. He's gonna have a tough go of it until it does.

True, except you do not follow with 2 seconds left and up by one in college, pros, high school, or junior high. Suspect it will not happen to this team again.

    Hey, Hoops,

Actually it was a satirical takeoff on the long discussion we had for football about coaching versus talent.

I think that discussion has continued with some of the recent mistakes on the court.

    Re: What a heartbreaker!!!!

I agree with all of the posters that it was a very poor call. However, you can never trust in the officials in any sport to be consistent in making the right calls all the time.

What does concern me is that we gave up a 7 point lead with slightly over two minutes left in the game. Getting a road win, even against a team expected to struggle like Hawai'i, would have been huge for this team. That being said, they are young, and I wasn't necessarily expecting them to win this game.

I do hope that those posters who were really optimistic about the team after starting 3-0 last week all in Hilton can be a bit more realistic, and also all the cynics and pessimists who insist we will automatically suck this season will cheer up and give this squad a chance. It's one game that we lost by one point, as painful as that is. The season is still very young.

I didn't see the game, but I think everyone needs to cut Brackins some slack. If we didn't have him this year (he's our only true inside scoring threat), where would this team be? Some of you guys should work on your long-term memory. Let's remember that Brackins was the guy who wanted the ball at the end of the UC-Davis game. Without him, we probably lose that game. He was also the guy who was named tournament MVP. I don't get it. Do you think your negativity will somehow inspire Craig to do great things?

    Re: What a heartbreaker!!!!

I'm not one to blame games on the zebras and I'm not gonna blame this one on them either b/c our defense, rebounding, offensive sets and shooting were all lacking down the stretch; however, I did watch the entire 2nd half and I have to say that the refs definitely played a big part in mounting the Rainbows comeback - long before the last foul was called on Brackins. They were whistle happy and not evenly b/n both teams.

If a Rainbow player so much as stepped foot in the paint, a foul was called down the stretch - we were not getting the same calls on our end. If you don't believe me, watch the final 10 minutes of the game again. I hate when these games are decided by the Zebras and not by the players - it really gets under my skin.

Sure, our guys let it slip, but the Rainbows had some help.

Remember when Jaques Vaughn fouled Dedric Willoughby with 5.5 seconds left in the Big 8 championship and let us win the game?...well maybe this a sort of basketball karma.

Ah, one of my greatest all-time memories as a Cyclone fan....to be fair though, I remember that foul being more obvious than the call on Brackins last night...of course that was almost thirteen years ago, and I am hardly unbiased
