    Re: Marquis Gilstrap report

Last year Reese's statistics weren't impressive. He shot only 41% from the floor and had 38 assists to 63 turnovers.

    Combined Season Stats

Maybe he's improved a lot this year? Their website hasn't posted this season's stats as of yet.

and how exactly is Gilstrap supposed to be able to pay his own way? As an out of state resident who can't earn more than $2500/yr.

Not to pick on any one person...I'm curious as to why we're all getting up in arms about something that may never become an issue? Or, at this stage, obviously isn't, since the kid chose to sign with ISU already? Just like any other player situation, there are doubtless ways of dealing with it.

    Re: Marquis Gilstrap report

ISU gave Gilstrap an opportunity to play for 1 year. Not a lot of schools would even bother. It helps both parties...perfect fits based on that one kid transferring. If he gets another year he may not have the option to use it at ISU but we can't plan for the additional year. As long as we were up front with him it's all good.

I don't know, student loans? I got 30K in loans, MG might have 5K with a probable six figure career overseas at the least. I think he'd survive...

I wouldn't say it's classless. As long as we are upfront with him about it from the beginning I see nothing wrong with it. As far as him possibly not wanting a 2nd year, that depends on how well he plays his first year vs. how badly he needs the money. If he can try and get a second year to improve and possibly go to the NBA as opposed to Europe, then I would think if he can afford to wait another year that he'd try to do that. I don't know. This scenario is getting too hypothetical for me haha

From first impressions, I'm pretty sure ISU will move him to the 3 slot. At 6-7 210ish, he's a little small for D-1 post play. I didnt see him handle the ball enough to know if he could play out front but I dont think that is his game. He could be a solid 3 with his outside shot and his ability to penetrate.
I don't know that he's totally destined for the 3. Against UNI, we had Haluska and Lucca playing some 4 at times. What they need is a mobile 4 that can hit the three (WJ?) yet rebound and defend the post. I could see Gilstrap playing some 3 against normal lineups, but more 4 against smaller lineups.

You could be completly correct. My speculation on the 3 deal is strictly based on his size. His game is somewhat like WJ (take it to the hoop while still shooting from outside). I do think he might be a better rebounder then WJ. I've only seen one game so I'm interested to see some more of him.

There has been a lot of hand wringing about scholarship numbers should Gilstrap get a 2nd year. My question is, are there any candidates on the team for an academic scholarship that might "lighten the load" in that manner?

Men's Basketball / FCCAAsports.com, the online home of NJCAA Region VIII / Information Center / Athletics / About TCC / TCC Home - Tallahassee Community College
Gilstrap dropped thirty points and 13 rebounds on the #1 juco in the country, which has 5 d1 signees, including two 4-star Memphis commits, and Trevor Mbakwe.
Pretty doggone impressive. We will give him a scholarship for his second year if he does get it.
