Marquis Gilstrap report

I attended the Gulf Coast CC game last night. I missed the game Fri night but it sounds like Marquis had a better game. The team they played last night was very outmatched by Marquis and his team both size wise and talent wise so they weren't pressed. Here's some things I noticed:

1. Marquis mainly plays the 4 position for GCCC. He is a legit 6-7 and maybe a little heavier then the 206 they list him at. Well on his way to a big twelve frame.

2. He likes to play above the rim. He had several dunks and they run several lobs his way.

3. Since he plays 4, he normally has his back to the basket but on several occasions, he did rotate out. He handles the ball well and has a great touch from the outside.

4. He has a great move to the hoop and had a great dunk over the smaller kid who was trying to guard him.

5. I counted 7-8 boards so he just missed a double double. The reason I bring rebounding up is that he got those boards even though his coach had him releasing the otherway most of the time when the opponent first released a shot. The result was that most of his boards were offensive and a result of attacking the hoop.

6. On the "room for improvement" side, he seemed a little careless with the ball inside a few times but their whole team seemed to suffer from that. The game more resembled a YMCA run and gun then a 1/2 court game most of the time.

7. Both teams stayed in man defense the entire game. At times, Marquis seems to let his guy get away from him. The kid he was guarding was about 6-4 a very quick. Again, it was a run and gun game so no one was playing great D. I'm sure GMAC will break him of that pretty quick.

Finally, at least last night, I thought Brad Reese was the better of the two. He is maybe 10-15 pounds lighter then Marquis (both 6-7) and a little more athletic. On the flip side, Marquis is more of a banger and is much coser to having a Big 12 body. Reese is going to get beat up at his current size. I think Marquis has a little better outside shot as well. Most of Reese's points come from dribble penetration.

All in all, I think he is a good get for us. Still needs to hit the weights and work on his defense but he'll get there.

Sorry to rattle on so long. They have several more home games so I'll report back later since one game doesn't really tell the story.

I don't know how much juco ball you have watched, but from my days watching my hometown J.C. (way back when they still had a team), that sounds very much typical juco basketball. Maybe cybsball20 can say if it's still like that.

Thanks Aclone. I'm looking forward to watching some more of their games. Your right, JUCO is absolutly a different game from Hilton.

From first impressions, I'm pretty sure ISU will move him to the 3 slot. At 6-7 210ish, he's a little small for D-1 post play. I didnt see him handle the ball enough to know if he could play out front but I dont think that is his game. He could be a solid 3 with his outside shot and his ability to penetrate.

Is he quick enough to defend a Big 12 guard?

If he plays the 3 for us he might be guarding small guys if they are going 3 guards.

Sounds like defense isn't his thing. If he is going to play a lot of minutes his only year here, he'll have to play tough D.

I can sure think of a certain player on our current team where defense "isn't his thing" either, yet he still starts every game and leads the team in scoring.

He seems pretty athletic overall. Having only seen one game, I can't answer with much confidence.

He was pretty good at turning on the D inside when he needed too. He didn't get outside on D much.

I should also add a disclaimer. All of my observations are just my uneducated opinion. I have been a season ticket holder at ISU for many years and seldom missed a game at Hilton. Beyond that, I never played the game, just a fan.

I'll get to more games and will have a better idea later.

I can say that if a smaller B-12 guard tried to guard him, they would have a problem with his size and ability to take it to the basket.

Reese may have looked better last night, but everything I've heard from those who have seen him suggests Gilstrap is the better player (and that team's MVP).

And thanks for the report. I have not seeing Gilstrap in person obviously so it's great to hear reports from those who have.

I think he is the piece we are missing. We don't currently have the explosive, athletic player that can play the wing. I've been watching a lot of bball early in the season and most other teams have that kind of guy that adds yet another weapon to fall back on. Right now, we have Brackins down low and 3 point shooters outside. It would be nice to have that middle threat as well.
