A year ago last summer there was a big buzz about a big man Mac had at his summer camp, someone everyone thought might be a Cyclone. An unknown from Yankton, S.D., Colton Iverson certainly made a name for himself as a 6-9 banger, and eventually slipped away to Tubby Smith at Minnesota.
Well, I saw something of his play last night as Minnesota played Virginia, and I couldn't help but think how fine it would be to see him playing next to Craig Brackins. The kid can run the floor, he can bang, and he can muscle it to the hole. He ended up with 14 points and 7 rebounds.
My point is that obviously Greg McDermott can identify talent. In the little I saw of him, Iverson reminded me a lot of a senior Jared Homan--only better. I really regretted that this one slipped through our fingers--though I can't guess who the "or" recruit would have been. In the long term, I'm not sure I would have wanted to make the choice between Iverson and say, L.A. Pomlee.
Oh yeah--and the '08 unknown camp standout edition of Iverson was Chim Kadima. Someone McDermott has reeled in.
