I'm aging too, but I believe Mal Warrick was the lone returning senior when Orr took over the program. He played his *** off, even in front of a sparse crowd, but his effort was appreciated and the crowd showed it. And he was a pretty decent player.
Some may say that Barry Stevens (RIP) hitting that basket against Missouri was the start of Hilton Magic, I'll say that shot was the culmination and fruition of what was being built. And I was there for Barry's shot also. What a great time.
We used to intimidate teams like Michigan State, Indiana, Kansas and the like. Now we can't intimidate Drake. Hilton Magic is gone.
Well, I was in my dorm room finishing up an English paper that I had to get done. Listened on the radio and rememeber feeling cheated for missing that game. Plus the fact I sucked at Engish and probably got a crappy grade.
What do you when we play Baylor? After actually meeting some of their fans when we went there this fall, I would have no problem cheering against them, or any other Baptist school from Texas...
Good point! I've never had any trouble rooting against Baylor. That habit was formed years ago, before I realized that they are the world's largest Baptist university. That made every story during their biggest basketball debacle.
You're probably thinking of David Moss, I think he was from Chicago but not sure.
One of the funnier things was when Steve Stipanovich from Missouri shot himself in the leg and lied about it but eventually got found out. (sound familiar??) Anyway, they played up here about a week or so later and a bunch of people had cap guns and signs that said "Who Shot Stipanovich??". The TV show Dallas was popular at the time and "Who shot J.R.?" was a famous quote from that show.
That's the guy. Johnny was standing by the bench and turned around yelled God ****** Moss and turned around to watch the game. That was when the students could get in sit in the middle. I was about 20 rows up right behind our bench. Shaeffer was right in front of us when he hit the three. Or was it the kid for Fort Dodge?
Not one time did the fans in Hilton stand and cheer last night during play. Pathetic. They shot free throws to ice the game and the crowd was sitting on their hands.
Student section was as good last night as it has been in a couple years.

IIRC, the 3-point shot was not in existence when David Moss played. And if you're referring to the Minnesota game - ISU was down by 6 points with 36 seconds left. I believe it was Shaeffer that barely missed a near half-court shot at the buzzer to win in regulation - but we won it OT anyway.
If I'm in the right era (forgive my memory, I've started blending years at this point), that was when the students had to enter a lottery to get season tickets and were assigned two separate seats for alternating games. The game I'm referring to, I sat four rows up in arena circle right behind the team.
The Tarzan whoops when the opposing team was shooting free throws in the 2nd half was particularly effective.....
ISU fans are the greatest in the world. All they ask for is hope and the belief that we have a chance to win every time we step on the field - Johnny Majors (paraphrased)
By the way CYCLONE ALLEY - the Tarzan whoop really does distract free throw shooters. AAAAAAh ahahahahaha AHAHAHAHAHAHA.... It's something the shooter recognizes and it is a literal distraction. Give it a try as a group - I'll bet it works.
