Some moron next to us was already screaming at Brackins before he even took that first foul shot late in the game. I mean just being an idiot.

Would've been nicer had he been wearing blue and white - but he wasn't.

I also remember a game with Kansas when Cy (wore a huge suit then) went out to center field, squatted, and "pooped" a couple of chickens that had been dyed blue then chased them around.

It is up to the five men on the floor to bring it out.
Nice sentiments, but I'd say that the sentiments below are more accurate. Part of the magic is helping the team win, not cheering when they do win. I would contend that there is nothing special (or "magical") about fans that cheer once their team is already doing well.

Great fans aren't only great fans when the team is great. That's what you call "fair weather" fans, certainly not "great".

Although the McDermott era has had zero Hilton Magic, this post is 100% dead wrong. You realize that 9 years ago we had an Elite 8 team? Hilton was full and loud all the time. You remember Texas's 88% free throw shooter choking in '04 as the place was rumbling? Hilton magic must have been dead then too, right? Or how about '05, when Tech was up 29-4 in the first half, and the crowd got on their feet and absolutely willed the Clones back to what ended up being a blowout win on our part. Or how about '05 when Haluska came back to Hilton? Boy, it was dead that night. Right now Hilton is lacking. I will not disagree, but anyone who says its been dead for 10 years was probably a student 10 years ago and thinks the pinnacle of everything in Ames revolved around their tenure there. Hilton Magic isn't dead, it's in a coma. Winning cures all. When everyone in the arena knew with 5 minutes left we were going to blow a double digit lead, are you telling me thats on the fans? Come on. The fans behavior is just a conditioned response. ISU can't handle a lead. Any sport. If we had a 20 point lead with 5 minutes left, I wouldn't feel comfortable. Is it because I'm a "bad fan"? No. It's because I've seen so many colossal screw ups to know that the only point in time an ISU victory is in the bag is when there's no time left on the clock and we have the lead.

Hilton magic is dead because know body who enjoys watching basketball wants to see 50 and 60 point games. It is getting pretty rediculous when McDermott has his team slow the game down for a solid 13 minutes in the second half. Real caoches want to win and win big not just by a few. Drake pressed in the second half and ISU took every second to get the ball across half court. Anybody who knows anything about basketball knows you have to attack the press and score off of it not just try to get it across half court like a middle school team. Face it when your coach's record is something like 1 and 7 against the MVC and 0 and 3 agaisnt Drake you are not cut out to be a big 12 coach. In my Opinion the last time we saw Hilton magic was the game 3 years ago when the crowd willed Mike Taylor to even keep us in the game agaisnt Kansas. Ever since then Gregs horrible coaching and his flat out boring style of play has just killed it.

Drake didn't full court press, they tried to trap at half court. Anybody who knows anything about basketball knows that...

You all realize the team only had 3 points in the final 7 minutes of this game....right?

When the team doesn't score or come up with a series of great defensive stops, it becomes increasingly harder to get pumped up.

As has been stated before, crowds react to effort and a team pulling out all the stops. This did not happen late in the game last night. It has nothing to do with anyone being fair weather or otherwise

I was ****** earlier this week when a thread compared Hilton to CH but it is almost there. Yes, I know we need the money from those people but really, is it too hard to stand up and cheer every once in a while?
I guess I am one of those lazy fat people you talk about. When you get to be lazy and fat we will see how much energy you have or how much your knees hurt! When you get old, lazy and fat I wonder if you will get to the point in life where the most important thing in the world is not whether Iowa State wins or losses a game, but you still enjoy the show. Maybe when you are old and fat you will make enough money that you can contribute enough so when you yell at the refs like I a lot did last night, they can actually hear you.

I don't usually respond to these silly threads, but I felt the need to stick up for us poor old lazy fat people, who do stand when necessary and yell when necessary and get tired of being blamed for losses, and just happen to pay most of the bills for the place!

There was no way that we should have lost that game last night. Coaching. Mac lost the game. Why? Let's see, we have Peterson in there who is like 5 ft. tall....everyone can shoot on him. Also, they can drive on him too...easily....why is he in the game in the most importaint defensive series? Out coached....didn't use TO's at the right moments....I am very ****** at Greg.

    Better win on Friday.

This is hilarious. There have been people in those seats doing the exact same thing since Hilton Magic was born, alive and well and flourishing--in fact, some of them were probably going crazy in the student section when Johnny upset Missouri. It's entirely irrelevant to the atmosphere of "Hilton Magic".

And that explains the rest of the game, how? Sure, people cheered when Lucca made threes. Then what happened? When, in that rough stretch, did the crowd suck it up and stand to call for a rally with a roaring, shouting ovation?

Sure, the crowd feeds off the play. But the players feed off the crowd as well. It's always been that way.

    Re: Hilton magic is dead!

I can't stay away from this one anymore. I was so ****** last night when I looked around no one was standing up. No one except the student section.

The team deserves better than for us to say "Wow, they're playing like crap right now, there is nothing we can do to help." We hung them out to dry last night.

Even at the beginning of the game, I could tell that Hilton Magic had officially hit rock bottom, even last year, I could remember Hilton rocking to Let's Go State loud and clear and now, nothing. It was barely audible outside of the student section.

About the only time anyone outside the student section stood up was for the fight song, and then finally with about 30 seconds left, 1/4 of the lower parquet level was on their feet. That was it.

I read through some of the comments where people remember Hilton being rocking even when the team wasn't that good or when the crowd rose to their feet to will the team on even when they were down as low as 29-4 to Tech. So where is it now? When the team needs you against an in-state rival and their lead is slowly evaporating away? Where are you when they need you the most? To will them to put down the rally?

They needed us last night and we, as whole, let them down. We could have cranked up the volume in the last four minutes to drown them out. The reputation of Hitlon from the late 90's and early 00's still exists, we haven't succeeded in eliminating that from opponents minds. It is still thought of as one of the better venues in the Big 12. Opponents will recognize when the volume starts to increase and remember where they are, a place that used to be impossible to play in.

I wish in the last four minutes, that in any game, everyone was encouraged to stand, just for the last four minutes.

Fans do have an impact on the game, whether you believe it or not. The home court advantage includes not having to travel and having your home fans disrupting the other team.

That is just my thoughts. Feel free to bash them however you want.
