CB appears to take plays off...he doesn't run the court well especially as he transitions to defense. Our inability to get to the free throw line against Drake is only an indicator of what the conference season is going to be like. We will struggle to beat average teams if we don't establish an inside presence either by strong post play or penetration via the dribble. Our offense doesn't move. WHY??? I think that this team has a lot of work to do.
Brackins is a very good inside player, but I don't see anybody else on the roster right now that's as good as Rashon, Jiri or Wes, so I really don't see us improving in the conference. Lucca can be a great outside shooter but we had about fifteen 3's and still didn't beat Drake at home, so the Big 12 schedule is looking pretty bleak. Brackins has no inside help, so I'm afraid he will get very frustrated in Big 12 play with teams collapsing on him. This is year 3 and outside of a couple of players I'm just not seeing Big 12 caliber talent that will even get us into the upper half of the league. I'm not giving up on GMac, but I'm getting tired of the excuses.
At times, yes, I love this team and how they play. At other times, I'd like to just not have any idea I'm watching my team self-destruct like they do.
What about now? We are not and will not be good without better players. Lickliter has had one less year and the talent pool in Iowa's program is far superior to ours.
The loss had more to do with execution. And it's early in the year and the team's composition has changed considerably, so there's still a good chance that will come with time.
I would argue that the difference wasn't talent. We just didn't have anybody out there that showed any desire to win in the second half. Iowa came out with a rabid intensity, and our guys just took it.
This is where cysbsball would point out things like leadership and body language, and he'd hit the nail on the head. Not a single player looked to be telling his teammates to snap out of it, or to say, "Follow me." We need a leader on this team.
The talent is there to do some winning, but the heart is not.
I'm still not a fan of this "our team is very young" excuse. I know we didn't recruit the way K-State did with Beasley and Walker, or the way Texas recruited Durant, but having a young team doesn't excuse you from not winning. McDermott and the team need to start winning or Harrison Barnes is history as well as any other potential 4 or 5 star recruit.
After the massive dump the team left on the floor of Carver last night this thread became mildly hilarious.
I did notice last night that when Cameron Lee hit the floor, it looked like he was playing at 2x speed versus everyone else we had. Maybe he needs to hit the floor more often and help set the intensity.
I would put this one on our frontcourt as far as last night goes. Peterson and Garrett did some decent things out there. Brackins looked like he had a tough time with someone in the post that was as strong or stronger than him, and he rotated badly many, many times on defense as well. I still put that down to the learning process. Oh, and I really liked the change of pace that Buckley gave us as well.
