GMac: Message boards hurt recruiting . . .
At Cyclone Report a thread entitled "Important remarks on GMac's call in show" has 117 replies and 4,685 views as of a few moments ago. I have a fair guess about the content of the originating post.
Monday night, an irate caller complained about invective spewing, ill-natured, program-complaining defeatist fans and asked Greg how he's able to bear such malcontents as he goes about building the Cyclones' mbb program.
Greg was gracious and low-keyed with his response, but he went on at length, evidence that he considers message board sewage (my word) a serious hurdle for down athletics programs fighting to make a comeback. (The caller said that he's not a violent guy, but if he were, he'd like nothing better than to slap around such fans. Greg didn't bite, never said a bad word about the fans.)
The coach said he has broad shoulders (figuratively, in addition to literally) and he can take anything that is dished out and march on without a second thought about it. It hurts him, though, when his players are singled out for rash criticism, he said; he asked that fans use him rather than his players as a pincushion (my word).
Importantly, Greg said he does not read online forums (iirc, said he doesn't have time to do that), but he knows for a fact that the players and recruits -- products of the internet age and as nimble-fingered as anyone -- are all over the Web.
Greg said the unfounded, vile (my word) criticisms and fan defeatism found on internet fan forums hurts Iowa State recruiting. Greg did not ask fans to stop that behavior, he asked only that fans duly consider what they're writing before posting.
Reading between the lines, imho Greg was saying, you will do what you will do, but first consider what's most important to you: Helping Iowa State succeed, or adding a nail to the coffin.

This is one reason I think Jermery should start adding a little fee to be a member of CF. It is great to have a free site, but it brings problems as well. There are a few other reasons to add fees also.

I hope this helps with the negativity. I can understand people's displeasure with GMAC, but bashing the players is ********.
Re: GMac: Message boards hurt recruiting . . .

What problems are there that you feel a fee would combat? What are your reasons? I'm not trying to sound rude I was just curious.

I think the lack of quality playing is what is hurting ISU and its recruiting. I like Greg McD and want him to suceed but blaming fans for venting their frustrations of ISU sports is low (although I will admit some fans take it too far but they have that at every school).

I would pay to visit this site, but I doubt Jeremy would do that.
I have noticed there's been an influx of stupidity lately. Maybe that spot on WHO did more harm than good. :jimlad:

Why would someone stupid do that. This is for cyclone fans who want to talk sports and what not. We cyclones talk for free

Well losing to SDSU isn't helping recruiting either. It works both ways. I think Greg, will get it turned around and I hope it starts this Saturday.

Please remember, though, that Greg did not raise the topic, he was asked a question and (I assume) gave an honest answer. Personally, I won't fault him for that. I would rather have his thoughts than an obfuscation.
