Vicious Circle: McD Haters Likely Hurting McD Recruiting
I'm not going to get all specific and pull research, but I imagine all the negative McD bashers aren't doing McD's recruiting any favors. Everyone needs to take a step back and realize that calling for his head isn't going to solve anything... The cards have all been played, and frankly I think everyone should look optimistically to the future right now. In two years, if everything goes right, there is a huge chance that we are going to have a pretty spectacular team. A coaching change between now and then will be devastating, and we'll be looking at another 3-5 years of below average performances. I'm giving McD a pass on the player attrition solely based on the fact that [edit] I believe it's mostly been a unlucky combination of regime change issues, academic performance (or lack there of), playing time, and off-court issues[/edit]. Granted, I'm also making the player attrition the scape goat to our lack of success this year and last.
I think everyone (especially all those that have been on JPs bandwagon for the last 3 years, 98% of CF it seems) owes it McD and ISU to ride this one out. We'll know for certain next year if it's going to work out or not. McD haters need to chill for at least one more year in order to give him a fair shot. This year is going to give our guys crucial experience for the next two.

Reason: There were in fact a number of players that have left that McD recruited.

I don't believe anyone hates McDermott personally, they just hate bad basketball. He's surely given us plenty of that.

No doubt it does.
I can't understand why everybody is having a baby about last nights game. My goodness Orr, Floyd, and Eustachy all had a lot of trouble wining in Boulder.

great post. if you look at isu bball since the big 12 came into effect i think we have only had like 4 winning seasons total yet some on here think we were a thing of consistency. give it time so we can actually build a solid foundation for once instead of using jucos each year to build success in two to three year time blocks. it takes time.

Another great post right here.

When I was in school, we were consistent... 1999-2004, but I also had to weather the Larry fiasco... Comparing then and now isn't really fair considering everything, but I can see why so many people do it. It's easy to over-inflate the good times...

Iowa State is not the only school that has message board meltdowns after bad losses. A lot of schools are much worse actually.
Message boards have very little affect on recruiting

Message boards have very little affect on recruiting guessing you graduated before message boards got big. What most other sites have is you have to pay to see the meltdown. You can see cyclones melting down for free. It does put us at a disadvantage sometimes.

In My opinion it comes down to this:
-I think everyone wants to see GMAC stay and win here. There maybe a "handful'' of posters that don't like him. Just like everything in life they will always be the loudest.
-I think GMAC has had EXTREME bad luck go on for him to succeed. Not trying to make it excuses..
-I can see the foundation being put into place, but things keep happening that cause people to get ticked.
-In order for ISU to be successful we need a CORE group of guys to be upper classmen and then bring in players like Brackins and Colvin to play with the core group. We are counting on fresh and sophs to be leaders. That typically only happens at OU, Texas etc...
-I am concerned that we are completely stale right now however.
-I want GMAC to finally get guys in place and start winning b/c he is a good guy and will stay here for a long time.
-FINALLY....We put too much stock into recruits reading message boards and saying it hurts recruiting. Has anyone ever been to any other college website? There are some SEC schools that will have posters organizing a "Cross Burning" party in the Head coaches yard if they lose a game and finish with 8 wins in football. Part of me says if ISU is doing this bad and can have Hilton and JT looking the way it does, I wonder what it would look like with a 8 win football team and a 22 win BB team.?
Make sure you don't call the charge. But make sure you call the foul on the scrum.... -

Message boards have very little affect on recruiting I disagree completely. In high school a friend of mine was recruited by a few BCS schools and he spent a TON of time reading message boards. Why the hell wouldn't you want to read what strangers are saying about YOU or the team you are thinking of joining?
Also, whether or not other schools have meltdowns doesn't mean it is ok for us to have one here.
It doesn't bother me that people voice their discontent. Its just that it only seems to be a handful of extremely vocal people who feel that they need to reiterate their point every ten ******* minutes.

It can be argued that the SEC football fans who go crazy are at programs with a much more storied history and tradition than Iowa State in both football and basketball. Thus it would hurt their program less.

Hey This may be a little off topic but look at the "lack of talent that G-Mac has been recruiting"
1. Wesley Johnson - will start on a very talented Syracuse team next year
2. Mike Taylor - drafted by clippers and has gotten some playing time
3. Dodie Dunson - one of Bradley's leading scorers as a Soph.
4. Criag Brackins - 5 star recruit that's lived up to hype
5. Diante Garrett - although struggling right now has shown ablility to be very good
6. Lucca Staiger - very very good 3 point shooter
7. Christopherson/Gilstrap/Colvin/Barnes? - all look to be solid players
I Think McDermott has actually done a pretty good job with recruiting he's just run into bad luck with some players and WILL get it going in a few years; take a look at the rosters at the beginning of each year and player losses before the years he's been here and tell me that these teams have been significantly underacheiving. I don't think so, give the guy a break. Re: Vicious Circle: McD Haters Likely Hurting McD Recruiting
I have never read so many people make so many excuses for bad playing AND coaching. Good golly, when someone makes a half-million bucks a year and "lays an egg", he/they need to hear about it. That's just the way it is. And, I still think it is reasonable to have many of us thinking about whether the current basketball coach has the stuff. If you don't want critical comments to affect recruiting then don't have terrible performances. Not criticizing a bad effort fools no one. Whether we complain or not....whether potential recruits read it or not....we have not played good basketball against ANY good team this year.

It seems to me a lot of people write before they think. It would help all conerned if more people did it the other way around.
