Re: Missouri....why not ISU?
I'll tell you why. We have a poor coach playing athletes the likes of Peterson and Haluska. Both should not be in a league like the Big 12. Why in the hell did he recruit Buckley? Where is he? He was a big pick up from Michigan...first team all-state. Why are we playing a worthless point guard who picks up his dribble, can't stop an opposing guard ever on defense, and has never shown the speed to get in the lane and get the bigs the ball in 2 years? This just tells me that our coach doesn't know what real talent is. Our slow-poke offense cannot compete in this league. DON'T tell me we have a lack of talent. Our game plans struggle. And Haluska....I think most of the kids now on campus could play with this guy at the Rec. He is completly over-rated...
It is pretty hard to stand up for GMac when he has the 2nd Highest scorer in the big 12 too and we still lose.

I do, however, have a hard time ignoring the facts of the past. I think people have fallen into the trap that ever since Orr was here the fans have built up this false perception that we're this "traditional national basketball power," when in all honestly it's laughable to think so. Since Orr took over 28 years ago we've been to a grand total of 12 NCAA Tournaments, made it to the second round a grand total of 4 times, the Sweet 16 twice, and Elite 8 once. During that time we have a record of 496-390, good for an approximate .560 winning percentage. That's not the resume of a school to be considered as a "national power," but yet at the same time we as fans think we deserve to have all of the entitlements of such a school. Hell, Orr himself has only 218-200 record. Granted, the depths he dragged ISU basketball out of is what makes him legendary in our own mind and not the record, and even though Orr was highly respected nationwide, he's not going to go down as one of the greatest basketball coaches - yet the fans want to name the court after him.
Look, I'm not saying that I don't want to win, because I do desperately. But the general longing of the fans seems to be that we need to return to our status of once national prowess, when the facts do not support that we were ever there in the first place.

And do you honestly think a better coach such as Roy Williams or even Tom Crean would have much more success with this particular team? Chuck Lidell: I paint my toenails with pink and black polish. But, here is the real question, we all think and know that gilstrap is going to be special for us next year, why did mac go out and get a quick fix of a player who only has one year of eligibility?? its obvious that they signed him because the missed out elsewhere on a player that has 2,3, or even 4 years left to play. Or just maybe... it was because Wesley Johnson... the player this team was going to be built around, decided to abandon the team... just maybe. -

Re: Missouri....why not ISU?
ALso, I believe Tim Floyd took over a program...and in year 2 he lost 95% of his scoring and won the freaking big 8 championship. YEAR 2. It can be done. It will never happen with GMac. This style of play just sucks. Why do you think he is going to change it next year because of a couple of players coming in?
ANd hey, I am not asking for a Big 12 championship right now... I really was hoping for a top 8 finish with this club.....which could have happened with some of the talent we have on this team.....would have shown us all some sort of progress.....especially on our style of play and young talent we have.......we are getting non of that right now....1-6 is really ugly.
We really need a point guard.....where is Buckley? For the minutes that I have seen him...seems like he can get into the paint.....more so than Peterson could ever do. IF the season might be a wash now....we need to get this kid on the court to see what he can do. Heck, the reason we played with OU was because Garret was driving to the hole...getting in the lane.

I think recuiting wise, we are doing much better, however, in terms of win-lose............ From what you typed, I have no idea if you are agreeing or arguing with me. In fact, I barely recognize it as English. Garrat(sp) was not a 4 star so if you are arguing with me I'd recommend getting your facts straight first.

Originally Posted by cybsball20 Do you think they would have assembled a better team in three years? Well...if they did, it would be ONLY because of their "name". Sort of like Tubby was able to bring in players to the U of Minn. Last I checked, hiring a name coach from Kansas UNLV or other school to a team like ISU is a bit rare. So, dont try to hang that on McD.
So, back to your question... Remove the "name factor" from the coaches you reference and keep their coaching skill and the answer to your question is "no" -

The difference is I think any of those kinds of guys would have prevented the mass defections that GMac has had to deal with the previous couple of years, making for a smoother transition. The problem was I don't think JP was going to be able to hire one of those kinds of guys, and instead had to hire an "up and comer," which unfortunately meant starting from square one as he couldn't hold on to the players that felt "betrayed".

Re: Missouri....why not ISU?
One thing I will agree on is I would like to see more of the DG and DB combo on the floor at the same time.
Two guards that can penetrate would help significantly.
