Re: How did you become a Cyclone fan?
I think it was because my uncle was an ISU grad. Others in my family didn't root for or against ISU/UI. We cheered for both.
As I became more interested in sports, it was too easy to be a Hawk fan, and most others were doing it. I didn't get to too many games before 1995, but I always listened to Pete. I still miss Pete.
In 1995, I became diehard everything Cyclone. Bought a red van, welded goalposts on with a buddy, and I still tailgate in that van today (when it starts).
Those MBB teams were sweet from 1995-2000. Those years are what I think ISU can and should be right now--that's where my opinions were formed (same with the WBB team). I also had the roller-coaster emotions with the Danny Mac era, because he became a true Iowa Stater the same year I did.

Re: How did you become a Cyclone fan?
Dad and uncles went to ISU. But mainly watching Jeff Grayer when I was a little guy. I have some great early memories of watching Cyclone Basketball with my parents. I would also draw pictures of Cy in school, and write game time stories that had Mr. Grayer making the final shot....winning it for the Cyclones.

Re: How did you become a Cyclone fan?
been going to football games for 33 years(I am 37). My parents are both alums. I just recognized at an early age how terribly arrogant and condescending the EIU fans were, and have been rooting for the good guys all my life. I would be an alum as well, but I got a full academic ride to a smaller school. Go cyclones!!!

Re: How did you become a Cyclone fan?
Uncle played football in late 80's where my brothers turned into Cyclones, then they turned me into Cyclones. Now my uncle lives and works in Iowa City and his kids are Hawkeye fans.
And my parents and all my siblings went to isu.

Haven't read thru all the replies yet but mine was as a kid at the Nick Nurse basketball camp when Fred Hoiberg, Loren Meyer, and Julius Michalik all came to Carroll and helped Nick teach some skills. Afterwards they hung around, signed basketballs, posters, shirts' etc. They were very down to earth, great guys.

Re: How did you become a Cyclone fan?
I was raised by my dad to cheer for both ISU and Iowa, but more importantly, hate the Huskers. Since ISU plays Nebraska more than Iowa, I started to care about Iowa State more. My favorite aunt was going to ISU, and was a big cyclone fan, so she influenced me too.
I liked McCarney, and his bowl seasons drew me in as a fan of Iowa State football. I didn't pay much attention to men's basketball until McDermott was hired, but I saw the press conference on TV and started watching basketball games regularly after that. Then when our previous football coach was hired, I wanted to learn more about him and found CF.
Been a huge fan of all Iowa State sports since then.

Re: How did you become a Cyclone fan?
Like I said in the other thread, it was Willoughby. I never really followed college athletics before. I worked at a job in Ames that sent a service guy to every function at Hilton. I went to a game with my boss when I was training for the job. Fell in love with the Cyclones that night. I used to run into him and Cato at Tazzles. Dedric was a really nice guy and he would always have time to shoot the bull.
Before then, I had been to maybe 4 ISU games, football and basketball, in my whole life. This fall will mark eight years in a row that I have gotten season tickets for football. I have been to Austin, Manhattan, Columbia, Lawrence, Lincoln, and Iowa City. I have missed one home football game in that time. (For a wedding) Next will be season tickets for Basketball and I have a cousin who is getting me into wrestling now. Football season is like my vacation for the year.

Re: How did you become a Cyclone fan?
I am from the Ottumwa area and when I was ten yrs old in 1988 the Cyclones played against each other at Indian Hills Comm. College. My dad took my brother and I to watch the game (he was already a Cyclone) and after the game I met the players got their autographs and Johnny Orr's on the program provided for the game. Ever since then I have bleed Cardinal and Gold for the sports here. Then I moved up here to attend Dmacc and I fell in love with the campus and the town here and met my wife who is an ISU alum so yeah I love ISU!!!

Re: How did you become a Cyclone fan?
I've posted this in previous threads - but when my older brohter was an ISU student he took me to a game at Clyde Williams Field when I was about 13. Luther Blue ran the second half kickoff back for a touchdown, the student section did a cheer which included a swear word - and I thought "Uhhhhmmmmm" - this is the COOLEST place I've ever been. Listened to every game for FB and MBB for years with Pete Taylor. Couldn't change now if I wanted to.
And the kickoff return was spectacular.
ISU fans are the greatest in the world. All they ask for is hope and the belief that we have a chance to win every time we step on the field - Johnny Majors (paraphrased)

Re: How did you become a Cyclone fan?
Started grad school at ISU in August of 1971. I know, that makes me old. Started going to football games in Clyde Williams that year. I guess I became a true fan when the Cyclones tied Nebraska in the mud bowl there with Johnny Majors coaching (not sure of the year but I think it was 1971). It rained on us the whole game and someone behind me relieved himself in the stands late in the 4th quarter . I became a Cyclone fan for life that day .

I always have been and always will be. Don't know why, just never been anything else.
