We had the pieces together during the season as well, and we have had the pleasure of seeing how that puzzle fell apart.
I sure hope it doesn't happen, but we have been kicked in the nuts a lot lately.

The PG and a slasher/ high flyer are the missing pieces. Its no easy task for a soph (1st yr starting) to come in and have the confidence and polished skill set to "run the show" as great PGs go. Garrett is fine considering his experience. But a good/great PG (as opposed to an avg. PG) makes EVERYONE on the floor better. Hopefully another year of maturity, or Colvin (although I won't be banking on it) will be just the ticket.

That team also had alot of build. Strong strong guys and were lightning quick.

I think you are forgetting Michael Nurse. I believe he was the starter at the 3 spot and Stevie was usually gaurding the post - great picture of him leaning on Mimms. That team was full of iron men - played only 6 players most of games - and yes and heck of a lot more athletic! But there is hope for next year (can't get any worse......

That said though, I too am optimistic. If Gilstrap is as good as advertised he adds exactly what this team is lacking and will provide a reliable second scoring threat to compliment Brackins. Hopefully DG can continue to improve in the offseason and learn to finish a few shots in the lane. We will have a lot of competition to start at the 2 between Colvin, Lucca, and Boozer, and we will have a solid role player at the 5 in Hamilton. We should also have some decent depth with JVB, Pomlee, Buckley, Eik, and 2 of the 3 out of Colvin, Lucca, & Boozer.
But, the team is built around Brackins, and if for some reason he is not playing for us next year we will be very very bad. I'm also worried about the year after that for the same reason, because outside of Brackins we have no inside scoring threat.

You go make a random but hurtful statement. What is your basis for making it? You understand the game so well that you can criticize Greg and offer other ideas for improvement?
Gimme a break. Let me know when you have experienced all sorts of lifes tragedies and come out on top.

Re: Could next year's team be like the year 2000's team
You guys are forgetting the importance of our Backcourt, and how well that Nurse, Horton, and Tinsley played together. That 15-15 year, both Fizer and Nurse had a year to play together, and when we got Tinsley, he was the glue that made the team stick together.
We then had 2 guards who could slash (JT and MN) and we also had 2 really good shooters always on the outside, KH & MN.
The chances of ISU having a backcourt that talented again is HIGHLY unlikely.

Re: Could next year's team be like the year 2000's team
TZJUNG you are so right. Actually both years 00/01 & 01/02 we had 3 very good shoot gaurds (Jake came in the next year for Nurse). Other teams couldn't gaurd them all and someone was always left open.
It is interesting - from the media guide on the 00/01 season the confrence minutes played - Fizer (582), Nurse (610), Tinsley (550), Johnson (420)and Horton (603) for the starters. Shirley (234) and Hawins (180) came off the bench....those starting 5 were incredble!
OK, enough meaningless stats! .....sorry

Re: Could next year's team be like the year 2000's team
I like how everyone is describing how good all the players were THAT year, they obvisously weren't all that great the year before because we only went 15-15 very similar to what we will do this year. Also, guys can and will get better, Lucca,DG,Buckley,Booze, and Eik will all improve greatly.

Re: Could next year's team be like the year 2000's team
The key from the 99 season to the 00 season was Tinsley & Horton. Nurse was almost forced off the team - couldn't cut it in the point. Throw in the fact that it was some pretty hellatious coaching by LE. They caught lightning in a bottle that year. 4 losses (until MSU) all season and 2 in OT, one against the #1 team in the nation.
I don't see next year anywhere near that - we don't have those players or coach - but if Gillstrap is what is advertised he is sorely what we need right now!

I cant help but wonder if this team could explode next year onto the national scene. We will probably go into next year projected near the bottom like the 1999-2000 cyclones, but just like them we will be returning our best player(hopefully, craig please stay) and will have solid experience returning in the backcourt. If colvin can explode and be a dynamic point guard who runs the shows like Tinsley did, then i can definetly see this as a possibility. Also if gillstrap is as good as advertised he will add a whole other dimension to this team. So with all that said, Lets go guys become the next 1999-2000 cyclones and put this program back on the map! You may need to lay off that robotussin.
