After re-watching some of the games

Our most glaring problem on offense is at the 2 guard. We simply can't make any plays from the two guard spot. I love Petey, but we are essentially playing 4 on 5 when he is in the game. I really think Greg needs to start looking at giving some, not all, but some of Petey's minutes to some folks with more athleticism like Boozer, Buck, or even Ike.

I agree with you, but as Iowa State we must have at least one guy who doesn't have D1 talent but plays because he works his freakin' butt off night in and night out. In my opinion Eikmeier should start and Petey should come off the bench with Boozer.

I can't believe you re-watched the games.. Anyway, although I agree the 2 is a problem, I also submit that the problem is 2, 3, and 4. Lucca shows up sometimes, but other than that Diante and Brackins are the only ones who can take it to the other team. There are too many weaknesses all over the court not providing help. This team won't get any better until there is serious improvement in play somewhere in the 2-4 spots.

Another forward/center would really help CB, and the 2 or 3 providing something in the mid-range and going in for rebounds would drastically help.

One of the things that really stuck out to me was how many times Petey had clear lanes to get to the rim, but he doesn't. To his credit he plays within himself. If we had a 2 guard who could take advantage of those chances it would free Craig up inside, give Lucca more space on the wing, and take a ton of pressure off DG.

I can hardly watch anymore, it just isn't any fun. There isn't enough talent out there. Guys like Hoiberg, Haluska (not the current one, the other one), Blalock or Stinson (depending on who is the 2), and yes even Shane Power (I'm digging deep) could take it in. If you have a 2 who just stands out there, he better be hitting 4 or more 3s per game. You need to be averaging double figures if you're only job is to shoot.

If Brackins had help in the front-court it would take tremendous pressure off any double-teaming, and with rebounding.

Now you know why I've been screaming to see DG and DB get significant minutes together. BOTH can penetrate...a big positive and a big need.

I agree..its the things Petey can't physically do that go unnoticed, which is why its really unpopular around here to say anything bad about him.

This problem will hopefully be solved with the arrival of Chris Colvin. I drool at the thought of a Colvin/Garrett backcourt.

I even think a healthy Lucca at the 2 guard with Boozer at the 3 would work. Lucca showed against UT that when he is healthy he can get to the rack.

I'm kind of hoping for a Garrett/Colvin/Gilstrap backcourt...although I kind of doubt Colvin starts from day one.

Our most glaring problem on offense is our offense. I don't give a **** who you have, if all you do is dribble and stand, your offense isn't going to be anything.

Watching other d 1 teams pass extremely well makes me very mad. We aren't going to beat anyone off the dribble, but that doesn't mean we can't make quick passes

+1. I suspect we'll see Lucca or Boozer starting at the 2 next year, but hope to see Colvin getting significant time off the bench. If Colvin could start right away though I would be thrilled, because it would speak very highly of his abilities if he was able to displace 2 juniors at that position.

Re: After re-watching some of the games

Its not just the 2 spot, its the combination of the 2 and the 3. With both Lucca and Petey in there, we have 2 guys that can shoot 3's but not much else. Throw Huluska in there and we probably have 2 of those 3 guys in the game 75% of the time. Thats whats killing us, not just that Petey sucks like so many think.

Jake Sullivan was a pretty good 2. Early on, he didn't take it to the hole much and we didn't suffer greatly for it, however, he was really the only guy on the court who wouldn't take it to the hole.

Unfortunately, with Wes leaving, we didn't have much of a choice regarding putting someone else alongside Petey/Lucca at the 2 and 3 spot. Boozer's mistakes early in the year made him a poor option, but he is improving greatly and can help to fill that role. Buckley is just too young. Garett is really the only guy that can create his own shot. If Wes was here, he would be playing 30-35 minutes a game. Lucca/Petey/Haluska would be splitting time at the 2 instead of at the 2 and the 3.

Next year, we still have Garett. Hopefully Buckley will keep improving and be able to provide some penetration. Boozer should improve even more in that area. Gilstrap should be a huge addition as a guy who can create. Colving as well should be a big addition. I think with just those 5 guys, you would have a solid rotation at the 1/2/3 spots. Throw in Lucca/Eik/Christopherson and there is a lot of ways to go.
