Since they all played together on his visits (faced up with HB), I think they know.

Odd, isn't it, that GMac had the exact same "luck" with Justin Hamilton?

GMAC didn't recruit Gilstrap. In fact he hadn't even met the guy before he committed to Iowa State.

GMac makes the final decisions on who to offer scholarships to, and who not to....Gilstrap is coming to play for Greg McDermott...I'd say that's good enough.

Exactly. Assistants do a lot if not all the work but the name on the class belongs to the HC. Always.

You bet...I don't see a lot of people blaming these losses on Coach Otz, Coach Rutter, or Coach Robinson...I also don't see people blaming missing out on recruits on these guys...

I agree with all of you BUT Greg McDermott had never seen Gilstrap play or met him BEFORE Gilstrap committed. That is all I am saying. AClone was trying to give McDermott praise for landing him where I think the praise goes to the assistant on this one

How can you not give the head coach credit for a recruit signing to play for him?...McDermott hired the assistant coaches...the assistant's seem to be doing a very good job recruiting and they deserve credit for that...but the bottom line is, commits sign to play for the head coach, not Coach Rutter, not Coach Otz, and not Coach Robinson.

Should Tim Floyd not get credit for landing Marcus Fizer...Fizer wanted to come to Iowa State before Floyd knew he was any good at all...and Fizer was the one that initiated all of the contact between himself and Coach Floyd.

I'll believe that the head coach shoudn't get the credit for recruits, when I start seeing people rip on the assistants instead of McDermott for missing out on guys.

Who cares how a guy gets here (as long as it's legal)...the bottom line is Gilstrap is coming to play for McDermott...he is a McDermott recruit...period.

I see your point. Bottom line, however, is he's still Gmac's guy. At least that's what the history books will say in 20 years :)

Just getting yourself in deeper here. If I were to give credit to anyone outside of GMac, it would be Kantrail Horton, whose opinion both GMac and Gilstrap trusted enough to extend and accept an offer.

As far as "giving praise", my original point was that sometimes it isn't "luck", but evaluative ability. You seem to be under the impression that GMac would never have seen any video or even talked to Gilstrap before he decided to offer.

Being as he's an in-coming COLLEGE SENIOR I would hope that he's at or near the top compared to current high school seniors. Seriously though -- I can't wait to see him play! We need a solid 3/SF in the worst way.

You guys are taking me the wrong way here. Of course it all comes back to the head coach.

But Aclone, you are saing that it was GMac evaluative ability that should be praised. While usually that could be the case, it is not this time, b/c GMac had never seen him play and thus could not evaluate.

If you're going by having "seen him play", no one, not GMac, not an assistant, not even Kantrail (aside from pickup games) had "seen him play", because he hadn't played.

Edit: I'll add that Tim Floyd hadn't seen Cato play, and GMac hadn't seen WJ play, either. Because neither of them had.
