How do the kids who take Morman mission years away from school get more than 5 years to finish!

they get an exemption, since it is for religious service. they don't have to go through an appeal, it is automatic for missions.

it doesn't have to be lds, and kid wanting to go on a religious mission could do so without an eligibility punishment.

Correct, the same applies for military service. The clock stops for both of these situations. You are also correct in that it is automatic, not an appeal process.
