Commodore Mens Basketball
Looks like Strap is starting to get the post season awards. Sounds like JUCO All American is a good possibility. GCCC plays Dade tomorrow afternoon at Chipola in the playoffs. I'm hoping to get off work early enough to go!
Averaged a double - double this year 22.4/10.1:biggrin:
Panhandle Conference (By Rob Cheney ) - TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (March 3, 2009) - The Panhandle Conference media announced its 2009 all-conference basketball teams on Tuesday. A panel of nine media members, with representatives from each conference city, selected First- and Second-Team all-conference squads, as well as an All-Freshman team, Player of the Year, Freshman of the Year and Coach of the Year for both men and women. Gulf Coast Community College's Marquis Gilstrap and Chimere Jordan were voted men's and women's Player of the Year, respectively. Gulf Coast also swept Coach of the Year honors. Jay Powell was voted men's Coach of the Year after leading the Commodores to their first FCCAA Tournament berth since 1999. Roonie Scovel, who guided Gulf Coast to a 12th straight PC Championship, was the pick for women's Coach of the Year. Tallahassee Community College's Bernard James was named the men's Freshman of the Year while Gulf Coast's Andrea Smith earned the honor on the women's side.
Gilstrap, one of two unanimous first-team selections in the men's voting, received 89 total points. The Covington, Ga., native and Iowa State University signee, led the PC with 22.4 points and 10.1 rebounds per game and was the only player in the conference to average a double-double. An All-America candidate, Gilstrap also shot 51.2 percent from the field, 74.2 percent from the free throw line and averaged 2.0 assists and 1.1 blocks for the Commodores. Gilstrap and his Gulf Coast teammates will carry a 22-8 record and No. 4 FCCAA ranking into Thursday's 3 p.m. (CST) tilt against FCCAA No. 2/NJCAA No. 3 Miami Dade College in the quarterfinal round of the FCCAA/NJCAA Region VIII Tournament. Chipola College will serve as the host site for the men's and women's tournament, which takes place March 4-7.
