Plus the issue of facilities comes into play. Drake football comes to mind. However they could work a deal with the city of West Des Moines to play at Valley High School's field. That is plenty big.
To make it happen I think you'd have to find 2 colleges and get the NCAA to move them up to D1. They'd have to have the facilities and meet the conditions. Dubuque has an arena that will seat around 5,500. Souix City has an arena that seats 10,000.
Other than leasing these venues the colleges would have to make sure their outdoor facilities are up to snuff. Baseball, softball, and soccer fields are prime examples.
I'm not sure how good it would be for the big schools, but I'd sure enjoy it. It would be great for the state. Plus you'd always have an Iowa school in the NCAA tournament. But how do you get Iowa and ISU in a conference with Briar Cliff and the University of Dubuque? Offer them a higher percentage of revenues for the first decade or something. Plus they are state schools so we could force UNI, ISU, and the U of I to do it.
I could see the Iowa Sports Channel. You could get a bunch of D2, NAIA, and D3 schools to have their games broadcast on it as well. Especially with Indian Hills JC in the mix I could see a lot of interest and revenues in something like that. Even though I love it as a fan. It will never happen. I'm sure its just the amount of influence in my thoughts from the way they doing things in Europe. But its certainly not dumb.. just a different way of thinking. But then again I'd better not go there either. Seems to be an argument that gets people yelling at me as well.

Anways I probably shouldn't even have explained. Anytime I say France does anything better than the United States I get flamed and my picture burned along with Bill Maher.
But if this was France, Iowa State basketball would probably be demoted to the Missouri Valley Conference or something.

Not dumb... just different. Also less competitive, less profitable, and less fun to watch. It is fun watching Dubuque come in for a exhibition game at the beginning of the year but I'll prefer going up against Missouri and Nebraska over Cornell and Simpson.

The main difference would be those (Missouri, Nebraska) schools would be the non conference schedule and the Iowa D1 schools would play the conference schedule and tournament. At least give me more credit than saying Cornell or Simpson should be D1. I said cities with a decent population and with an arena. I only took offense because it was simply a concept I borrowed from international basketball. And I don't think the rest of the world is dumber for using a different method. -

Why would Nebraska or Missouri schedule games with the Iowa State Cyclones hailing out of the Iowa conference??

That seems to happen at in state games.
