How do you get an extension to walk into the mess? Before you've started the job? Will the Lions sign their #1 pick this year, then give him an extension before the season starts? Maybe you get an extension after walking into the mess, or maybe you get a longer contract because of the mess, but you don't get an extension for walking into the mess.
The extension could have been a contingency-based one (which it sounds like), wherein the length of the incentive would be directly proportional to the degree of trouble that the mess would officially turn out to be. Sounds like the extent of the coming penalties weren't known when Mac signed the contract, but they had an idea what could be coming. Therefore, they had the details of the extension prepared for the time when they knew the full extent of the problem.
The Lions should be offering tons of sweetheart deals to someone before they ruin their career in that disaster.
He had to get guys who could graduate before we got penalized by the NCAA.
Takes time to rebuild a crippled program.
Unfortunately, quite a few of the guys he has brought in won't ever graduate Cyclones, if at all.

He may be signed untill 2015 but he is obviously feeling some pressure or he wouldn't be bringing in a one year player and possible another Juco in a class of 2/3.
