McDermott is optimistic
According to this morning's DM Register, Coach McDermott is optimistic about next year's team. Has there ever been a coach in the history of basketball that publicly said he was pessimistic about his team's chances? When the Register asks him about next year's team, what is he supposed to say? "Well... we were terrible this year and we're going to lose our best player to the NBA so I think we're going all they way, baby!" His answer is so "by the book" it's not really even a story. http://www.desmoinesregister.com/art...0604/903130357 -
Re: McDermott is optimistic
If i remember correctly before this last year mcdermott had been quoted as saying this could be a difficult year. Don't really feel like doing the research right now. Plus i don't want to do all this work for someone who just bashes Gmac constantly.

Every coach in America is optimistic about next year's team, so why even ask?

I could imagine that Boeheim (Seeing his press conference again right now) or Bobby Knight might say something rather sour about their teams, but most will be optimistic.

Re: McDermott is optimistic
Why is he optimistic?? His best player is going to leave AGAIN, then Barnes is going to announce where he's going to college--which won't be I-State. Other than that, everything is just great...

Re: McDermott is optimistic
Of course he is. Do you expect him to say anything else? These guys at the D1 level are as good of politicians as they are coaches.
If he's that optimistic he'd fit in great here on CF.

Re: McDermott is optimistic
When we were picked 11th in the conference in the preseason he reacted somewhat convincingly with (paraphrasing) "We certainly feel we are a much better team than 11th best." Smoke and mirrors.
I would question the timing of the recent comments in that he could have waited until his players had time to improve so we can at least buy into things we haven't seen. Being optimistic about the team we just saw and two players he has never coached is the definition of coach-speak.

Re: McDermott is optimistic
The real story here is that the Register did a story on ISU, with no game to talk about. I was expecting the next ISU basketball coverage to be in October. -
Re: McDermott is optimistic
IF Brackins stays we will be much better with a true 3 man.
Make sure you don't call the charge. But make sure you call the foul on the scrum.... -
Re: McDermott is optimistic
We need to go all out for HB a kid like that in your back yard no reason not to get him, hire his mom as asst. coach!!

Re: McDermott is optimistic
Well of course he is going to say he is optimistic, i believe this is true because as well with the gained maturity, we gain a few new faces that have the quote "potential" to be that missing link from last year that was all so apparent.
He will be optimistic in an interview with a newspaper because you can't say we are not going to be good next year and expect to sell tickets, come on guys its simple marketing... -
Re: McDermott is optimistic
Why NOT be optimistic if your gmac...Greg has six years left on his contract and a boss in jamie the bookeeper pollard who loves him...
Things could NOT be going better for gmac....Sorry but I can't say the same for the ticket buying public!!!
Congrats to Harrison Barnes for a great state tournament...
