Maybe McD needs to have a hard look at his staff?

I think McDermott needs to use the off-season to take a hard look at his staff, and maybe make some changes. Perhaps bring in a top-notch recruiter, someone like Wayne Morgan was to Eustachy. Morgan wasn't a good head coach, but he was a really, really good recruiter.

I think he made a great addition last spring adding Robinson to the staff. It was a needed move and I give Greg credit for it.

I think Robinson will be that go-to recruiter.

I'm okay with his staff, and Mcd is IMO a good enough recruiter with his help already. I mean, he did get Brackins....

He and his staff are the right men for the job - it's just not an overnight job in Ames. They have some great kids coming in and even better possibly on the line. Just learn to relax a bit and you'll thank them in a couple more years.
A program isn't built on one player and it doesn't succeed because of one player, thus a program won't fail if it doesn't get that one player.

If anything we need a guy that can teach our guards to be men and not boys.

Maybe he could fire some of his assistants, demote some others, then announce that he is the new basketball coach at Auburn University.
Gene Smith, 1993-2000. 7 years, 6 NCAA's, 1 bowl game. Revenue sports postseason participation 50%. Good.
    Bruce Vandevelde, 2000-20005. 5 years, 4 bowl games, 2 NCAA's, 2 NIT's. Postseason participation 80%. Better.
    Jamie Pollard, 2005-. 4 years. 1 bowl game, 0 NCAA's, 0 NIT's. Postseason participation: 13%. The next big step.

My ignore list: splitidentity, tarheelhawk, superdorf, clones_jer. That is all.

...and Taylor and WJ and Colvin and Gilstrap. We just need to keep building and not lose key players every year.

Maybe he needs to get a top notch "retainer". He can get good players in the system, but when you top guy leaves early 3 straight years its like getting kicked in the junk. Its called "building" a program. You can't build when your foundation gets torn out every year.

In other words - teach them to be juniors and seniors and not freshmen and sophomores?

Re: Maybe McD needs to have a hard look at his staff?

Recruiting doesn't seem to be the problem. The problem is space on the roster. The scholarship situation has been discuss way too much so I won't start that again. We have lots of great recruits in the hopper. I'm not concerned about getting the talent. I'm concerned about where to put the talent.

Re: Maybe McD needs to have a hard look at his staff?

He has some great recruiting assts, he can and should just concentrate on coaching up the players. Otz and Robinson are getting some great guys, I still second guess a lot of the last second signings, but they are getting some stars players.
