They get paid by a school to deliver their players (clients) to the school in return. This was only made easier when the NBA added their age limit.
All this has happened since LeBron. Not started by LeBron, since LeBron. LeBron opened peoples eyes to the worth of an 18 year old kid with exceptional basketball skills and people now want to gain off of that. Surely its not good and boderline disturbing, but the NCAA is shoveling in the cash so why would they attempt to curtail the behavior?

Thing is, alot of times coaches aren't giving the players the option to get better, it's get out so we can bring in someone better...

Very very frustrating. I think this is part of the reason why there are so many more college basketball teams that are good. Back in the day, if you didn't go to certain schools, you weren't going to be pro. You'd go to those schools even if you sat on the bench for a couple of years.
Now there is so much emphasis on potential and opportunity, that guys are going wherever just to play. With the internet, cable, satellite, guys playing for St. Mary's or San Diego State will get noticed where they may not several years ago.
In our case, it often just a situation of offering guys who weren't ready to be at this level in the first place and just want to play for a couple more years before they do something else with their lives.

Re: What has happened with college basketball?
Right now the NBA is much better to watch. Better shooting, better athletes, better DEFENSE!. Yeah I said it. The NBA's defense is much better than college.
Real reason why NBA is better....it use to be that you knew players on every college team b/c they were at the same school for 4 to 5 years. Now 2 years tops for a lot of the good teams and it makes it harder to follow IMO

Money, greed. That's my short answer, its very vague and not the only place its happening but a lot of valid points are being made in this thread but it all comes down to the dollar signs and who is standing to profit the most. Re: What has happened with college basketball?
ummmm fans want a winning team and are tired of spending money on the product that is put out on the court?? mcd. finally gets it and is telling his players that they are not ready for the big 12. Its his butt on the line and three years later he finally gets it

Re: What has happened with college basketball?
Okay then I'll try to make it clearer. Mcdermott's had about 11 players leave now as I understand it.
You're blaming the players for not having loyalty. We've got a coach problem.

Re: What has happened with college basketball?
In the case of Iowa State, it's seems rather clear that in a some cases of player turnover (too many IMO) over the past three years, the coach recruited kids that just didn't have the skills to play in the Big 12. After a season or so, this became clear to both the kid and the coach, and the kid left for an environment that better suited his abilities.
I have a very hard time blaming the kid in that instance. If I'm a kid, and a Big 12 coach offers me a scholarship, I assume that coach knows what he's doing.

Money is everything. Bottom line. Plain and simple.
The NBA is willing to roll the dice on kids and will throw a multi-million contract at a draft pick someone just to see if they pan out. If they don't, no big deal.
Want to know why kids leave early? Let's say a guy is considering leaving and knows his first contract will be worth 2 million. That's a $100,000 over the next 20 years. How many other college kids would give up their major to take a job guaranteed to pay them $100,000/year until they're 40. Some people, depending on their degree, may not make that before they retire.
The only kids that stay 4 years are the ones that know they have NO chance of going to the NBA and need to get an education.
