    Re: MBB Big 12 Predictions

When I look around the league I see 5 teams that I think are clearly better than us:

    KU: Goes without saying.
KSU: They only lose Kent and add some very quality players.
OU: They lose a lot but are bringing in a loaded recruiting class and keep Warren.
    UT: Duh.
A&M: Only lose Carter and I'd be surprised if Elonu stays in the draft.

I see OSU, Mizzou, and Baylor as losing a lot of players but bringing in solid classes and returning solid guardcourts. NU returns a lot and actually adds big guys!

I expect to sweep TT and CU.

How this shakes out, I don't rightly know. However seeing what I think is five teams better than us, 4 teams we are on par with (and that might be a bit of a reach), and two teams I think we are clearly better than, I don't know if it equates to a top 6 finish. However I really, really hope it does because I want Hilton to be fun again.

    You're right, my bad!

1/3 was in my head, 1/4 was apparently on my fingers.

It only strengthens my point, so thanks!

I think this sums it up pretty good.

Will we make changes to improve our record? Will we be able to make those changes with inexperienced players? Lets sure as hell hope so because ISU basketball has not been fun to watch for quite a while now.

I'd love to be on here arguing the finer points of the commercial volume and applebees shuffle on the big screen after a win, rather than talking about people standing around the arc after a loss.

    Re: MBB Big 12 Predictions

I think we finish 6th in the conference, which will sneak us in to the NCAA tournament. We will do a better job at cleaning up in the non-conference portion of the schedule (no more SDSU's or Hawaii's) and surprise a few teams in the Big 12.

We will finally have the horses in many positions to get on a hot streak and get some momentum rolling. With Brackins coming back and optimism high overall, expect fans to fill the stands like we haven't seen for a few years... and dare I say it.... Hilton Magic will be back!

Pretty spot on, but I don't agree with you on Nebraska.

They lose their top 4 players from last year. (Ade, Verlander, Harley, and Cookie). They may be adding some size, but it is very unproven.

One is a message board legend who could have played the second half of the season. I assume Diaz isn't that great as UNL got off to a decent start in league and realistically felt like they had a shot at the Tourney this year. If he could have contributed he would have played. Consider the hype of the redshirts last season and how that panned out.

The other new big guy played on Lucca's club team and suffered the same NCAA fate. There were 3 of them. 1 ISU, 1 Wazzu, 1, Nebraska. For what it is worth Niemann was the least herald of the 3. In addition the only guy on the team with size last year is having chronic knee problems and may not be able to play next year.

My take on Nebraska is, they don't have anyone who can shoot, they don't have anyone who can handle the ball, and the rest of the team is a question mark. I feel like they have overachieved the last couple of years, but Sling Blade is about to snap and lose the team. Dougendoura, Harley, and Verlander were all great leaders, character and effort guys. Sek Henry and Ryan Anderson are soft and mentally weak, so I see a huge void in leadership and a disaster of a season coming in Lincoln.

    Re: MBB Big 12 Predictions

I think the past 4-5 years of disappointment is tempering expectations which is a goop approach.

This will be the first year in a while where ISU has...

    1) the core team returning
    2) same top player (already pressure tested)
    3) a bona-fide star (lottery pick)
    3) (doesn't have) the need to "re-invent" ourselves (team chemistry already built - seem to be common goals and concern for each other and the "team")
    4) a legit chance at a top notch immediate impact player (Gilstrap)
    5) capable depth at the guard position (some assumptions here that Buckley, SC, and Colvin can help DJ)
    6) a true center that isn't a first year player
    7) the ability to win without shooting the 3 pointer... but can if needed

I think we'll finish in the top 5, and if Gilstrap turns out to be a star... then Brackins and Gilstrap will take us to the top 3.

(might also just be the cool-aid)

With that said, Gilstrap may not show up, others may transfer, injuries could hurt us, or our game plans could just stink... so it wouldn't shock me to finish 10th.

    Re: MBB Big 12 Predictions

It all depends on 2 things:

    1) PG play. Can Colvin come in and play well right away? Or can DG or Buckley step up their games

    2) Gilstrap. If he is the real deal, we are instantly better. Could fill the WJ role we missed this last season.

I am going to assume that one of the two things is true

Texas as #9 in the Big 12? Barnes has made the NCAA tourney 11 years in a row, adds the #1 shooting guard, #1 small forward, another top 75 kid, and returns Balbay, Mason, Johnson, Pittman, and others, and James might also come back. They are as close to a lock for the top 6 as anybody and I'd be shocked if they weren't in the tourney.

    Re: MBB Big 12 Predictions

I'm very optimistic about next season. CB coming back, changes everything. Hopefully it gives the team an extra lift that has been missing the last couple of years.

ISU must "cleanup" in the Non-Conference and "defend Hilton" in the conference schedule. Look for Hilton Magic to return to Ames, its been a while. I think ISU should be able to win a few Conference Road games.

Texas - at Home - Must win
Okie St - at Home - Must win
Texas AM - at Home - Must win

at Texas Tech - Road -
    at Baylor - Road -
    at Oklahoma - Road -

==> Must win a couple of Conference Road Games.
