Easy to take a 5star and say look what he did with him but other people already thought/knew he was a great player. This pretty much explains it all, lol.
Yes Brackins was a 5-star recruit, but did you watch him at all last year, or even the beginning of this year? He struggled, even with Jiri down-low to "protect" him. It is true many players make improvement between the start of their freshman year and the end of their sophomore year. Some of this is independent of coaching, some is not. How much is hard to figure, but fortunately we have other samples that can, collectively, allude to McD's ability.
Jiri- if you didn't see the change in the way Jiri played from the start of his jr season to end of his senior season, I have nothing to say that wouldn't be personal. The "teaching" McD forced on Jiri was publicly known.
Grant Stout- not very highly regarded coming out of high school, with-in two years was giving ISU and Iowa fits, and all-MVC. Probably would have ended up starting at either Iowa or ISU.
David Gruber- was 6-7 at best, lightly recruited, but became all-MVC, gave ISU and Iowa fits, etc.
Schneiderman- another lightly recruited big man who's highly developed pot game allowed him to become all-MVC, play professionally.
Coleman- Would have started many games at ISU. McD only coached him for 1 year, but was MVC freshman of the year, and his senior year was only marginally better than freshman year. Just another non-five-star big man who did well when coached by McD.
It is too early to judge Hamilton, as we don't know much about his game before McD. It did seem like he made progress last year. Maybe for you, a coach is only measured by the All-American big men he has produced. Wait, I bet many of those were 4/5 star recruits, so the coach had nothing to do with it, right? I would bet if McD was given similar material, he would have many All-American big men.
We can all agree the results have not been what we would like the past 3 years, and we all have theories as to why. However, that should not cause us to think negative towards anything McD. There is also no dispute, compared to 99% of the recruits out there, Doug has received better training to be a good post player.

Lol .........
Ill laugh my *** off if he explodes this summer and fall and all the shiny objects, purty stars crowd will be eating plate after plate of crow. Even if he walked on, that crowd will continue with the cynical snide comments. I think it would be great if he joined his h.s. teammate and walked on.

While I agree that Greg has gotten the title of "great big man coach" w/o a lot of results at Iowa State to show for it, you are dead wrong on Jiri. He got much better under Greg over the 2 years
Soph year he averaged 8 and 3
Junior year he averaged 11 and 6
Senior year he averaged 12 and 7
For a guy that is not a true big man, I would say that was a pretty solid improvement

What other posts are we recruiting for 2010-2012? Hopefully Hamilton and Pomlee will have improved offensive games and Dendy can move into Brackins role in 2010. Jordan seems like a smaller PF and Doug McD is somewhere between a SF and PF.
