Out of HS, Hornacek ever so briefly attended one of the Ivy's (Cornell maybe?), didn't care for it and returned to the midwest. His basketball coach (Father) had a relationship with Orr and he landed at ISU, which ended up being very beneficial for both parties. Since Ivy League schools don't grant athletic scholarships, he didn't have to be released from anything and was free to join ISU's squad. I have no idea if he was promised anything beforehand, but I can vouch that he joined with little fanfare. Nobody knew who he was upon his entry to that first game...
was he offered the same thing at iowa?
Dependence on meaningful contributions from walkons means a failure in evaluation of your scholarship athletes.
Not necessarily, CrossCyed. Some players develop later than others. Would you have been happy if he would have gone to Ellsworth for two years, refined his game, and then transferred to Iowa State? I don't see a whole lot of difference in that scenerio versus being at ISU as a non-scholorship guy playing in a mop-up role for two years and then getting meaningful minutes and possibily starting during his last two years.
Having said that however, I think Palu's interests may have been better served being on the floor for 35-minutes a game at Ellsworth for a year or two rather than "riding the pine" at Iowa State. Troy Muilenburg at Ellsworth is an outstanding coach (he also has some outstanding assistant coaches including former D1 player Ron Bayless) and there is no doubt in my mind a year or two there would have prepared him well to play at the next level.
How does that make any sense, Clones85. If he is "not a D1 player," as you attest, why would he be a "great walk on" at a D1 school? He either is a D1 player or he isn't! If he's not, why would you want him at Iowa State under any conditions. You make no sense, man.
