My perception matches yours, cc4td28.
I was most impressed with Gilstrap. I think he's going to be a great player for us and contribute right away. Loved his athleticism, intensity, and tenacity around the hoop. If he brings that to this league, I can't wait to see what he does when real play starts. I hope we can get him another year. Yeah, his 3-ptr was off tonight, but apparently he can hit them when he's on.
I also liked what I saw from Christopherson. Pretty smart player.
Colvin had a rough start and got surprised, I think, by Ryan Sears. Several of his passes got batted away, and he got stripped a few times early on. I didn't stay for the 2nd half -- maybe he played better. On the plus side, he has a great handle, excellent quickness, and a winning attitude. (He's going to need a good attitude on the team he's been dealt. This was a draft? *scratches head*)
In any case, it's just one cap city league game. Hard to tell a whole lot at this point. I'll definitely go back to watch Gilstrap play.

Last year I thought JVB would be better than Wesley Johnson based upon his Cap City League play. Don't get too caught up in what you see.

Very impressed with Christofferson... looks a lot like another Petey out there. I would love to see Petey take him under his wing and mentor him a little bit since he will be coaching this year. Also I thought Buck played very very well. I think I'd rather see Dominique and Christofferson at the 1 and 2 this year instead of Diante and Lucca.. just my two cents worth.
Gilstrap is going to be good.. would like to see a better shot beyond the arc though. (Still way too early to tell, I know) Definitely should start at the 3 though.
Dendy seemed kinda out of it/lazy and was at times a ball hog... lots of potential though.
Colvin has amazing ball handling skills.. also very good at getting to the hole--something we lacked from our guards last year.
Anyone know why Hamilton wasnt there tonight?

You are right in a sense not to get to caught up in CCL results, but you can pretty much tell who the real players are if you pay attention to more of the above instead of who is scoring more points in this league.

Did you actually watch a game last year? My 2 year old could tell in the cap city league that JVB wasn't 1/2 as good as Wesley
It would be silly to look at stats. But I think you can get a decent feel for what kind of player a guy is and what his skill level is by the league. For instance Gilstrap. You can tell he is the athletic 3 that we missed when Clark left. He is much more skilled with the ball though than Clark ever was

Re: 6/17 Capitol City League Thread
"Jitters" in this league which is basically a glorified pick-up game?? Man, I hope that is not the case...can you imagine what will happen in Allen Fieldhouse if they have "jitters" playing in this league??
I would assume that this is the first time most of you have seen these players play in person. That being the case, how can you say a player was "off" with his outside shot? Maybe that particular player just does not have that good of an outside shot?
Am I missing something here or are you basing your assessment on what you hoped to see based upon the overzealous assessments on this site from our so-called "recruiting experts"? And you "recruiting experts" know who you are!

I cheer for two teams, Iowa State and whoever is playing the hawkeyes. -

And you "recruiting experts" know who you are! Sounds like the only player that did not shoot as expected was MG. Perhaps the expectations were based on stats from the player's previous experience. But your version/conspiracy is much more dramatic. Go with it.

Re: 6/17 Capitol City League Thread
I talked to a few of the Iowa State players and they mentioned being tired and sore after starting summer workouts. This is probably the first time for some of them to do real weight training.

Re: 6/17 Capitol City League Thread
Comments from last night's games.
Probably the best players (ISU) as far as playing their positions were Christopherson and Buckley. I think Scott will see a fair number of minutes this year. Scott really played within himself, showed good penetration and quickness, shot at the right times and in accurate (I didn't get all his shoots but I had him at 6 of 8 with 3 for 4 from the three line). Made all his foul shots.
Buckley showed good ability from the three line as well...had him at 4 of 6 at one time.
When Sears or Wedel (Drake) were guarding Colvin, Chris struggled to get going. He settled down but was probably surprised by the speed. Chris will be a contributor as he looks like a good team player. Great attitude.
Dendy...there is a reason this guy went the juco route. I didn't see any consistency in his play. He was out of position most of the time. He took at least 16 shots (4 of them were 3's) and made 3. He really forced a lot instead of getting other involved. A fair amount of complaining about calls The foul line absolutely killed him. Hopefully, things will settle out.
Gilstrap...he and Dendy started out pretty much the same early in the game...somewhat out of control and not getting others involved. Marquis did progress nicely as the game moved on. Not afraid to shoot from anywhere (I had him with at least 20 shots, made 7). Needs to work on his foul shooting (8 of 14) as he will get to the line with his style of play. If Marquis can get used to being someone other than "THE" man, he will definitely open Brackins up some more.
Boozer...started slow (especially from the three line) but recovered well. Charles kept his motor running and hustled well. Talked to him after the game during the next two games. He appears to be a solid team member and is looking forward to this year.
Garrett...I quit counting after Diante's shot count went past 20 (there were still ten minutes to go in the game). Some good assists with about the same number of turnovers. Diante seem to be a good team member. Really didn't see anything different compared to how he started last year.
Dorr...took advantage of what was given to him as far as shots go. Proved to be fairly accurate.
Palo...I thought Bubu did a nice job handling the ball. Stayed in control, had several assists, hit his foul shoots.
Pomlee...did not play as well as I hoped for...seemed slow defensively compared to what he did last year in the CCL. I only watched the first half but offensively his shots were weak. Foul shooting appears to be an adventure.
Vanderbeken...sure didn't play like a veteran. Still love jackin' the 3-ball (2 of 8). Really avoids the paint. Hopefully, he will figure out how to contribute better in a more organized setting.
McDermott's son Doug...stayed in control. Hit 4 of his 5 first shots including a 3. It will be interesting to see him develop.

Re: 6/17 Capitol City League Thread
Hamilton has been very sick this week.

Re: 6/17 Capitol City League Thread
Thank you for your assesments, gentlemen. I think what you see in the CCL is exactly that, CCL play. As far as I'm concerned, they're playing fun and undisciplined basketball. I see no reason why people should get their hopes up/be worried about what they see.
