6/24 - Capitol City League
Just got back from the CCL games tonight. Couple things worth noting...
Christopherson - I like him a lot. He's more physical, athletic version of Peterson or Haluska. I think he's much more talented and could play some valuable minutes this year. Good shooter, can handle the rock and take it to the hole.
Colvin - Had a little bit of a rough night. Ashton Sauls kind of lit him up. He doesn't have much to play with on his CCL squad, so it will be interesting to see how he adjusts to playing with better talent.
Oliver - It would be nice if we could redshirt him. He's not big enough and he needs to learn to be more physical. He really heated up in the 2nd half though and drained 3-4 3's in a row.
Pomlee - The redshirt definitely helped him. He's a project but he made some 10 footers and played the boards nicely. He should be a nice contributor before his time is up at ISU.
Dendy - Athletic and active on the boards. Caught a nice lob from Gilstrap in transition and he got up on it too. He could be just what we need to give Brackins the occasional breather and light a spark off the bench.
Gilstrap - You can tell the talent is there. Was sometimes trying to do too much, but he's legit. Once he gets in the rotation with DG and Brackins, he should be able to work in nicely and get his looks.
As for the guys that are returning...
DG - Looked good. Ran the offense well and got into the lane a lot. Missed all 3-4 of the 3's he took, but knocked down some jumpers.
Hambone - I believe he sprained his ankle last week and he looked a little sluggish, but it's Hambone, he's fundamentally sound and hustles.
JVB - Did not look like he wanted to be there. Effort wasn't much, but it's CCL, so no big worries. Knocked down a couple 3's in true JVB fashion
Buckley - Ran the offense well and did a great job of finding Dendy & Gilstrap. He was in control as well, which is important because I guess that was a concern that McD had with him last year. If he can run the offense like he did tonight, he's going to play some big minutes next year.

The main concern with Buckley was defense...or lack thereof

I think he's going to be a really good one here. Is it basketball time yet? I can't wait!!

Was Barnes there tonight?

Re: 6/24 - Capitol City League
I caught the second half of the second game and the first half of the third game. A lot of what I have to say is in comparison to how they played when I saw them play last Wed.
Dendy--Much, much, much better than last week. He made some nice shots in the lane, played some defense, and got some nice boards. He was also on the receiving end of a monster dunk off a Gilstrap alley-oop.
Gilstrap--didn't look all that great tonight. His shots were off and he kind of disappeared. He looked much better last week.
Boozer--completely disappeared from the game. I can't recall him doing anything. Which is odd, because he is typically a pretty good CCL player.
Hamilton--He seems bigger. I don't mean height wise, he just seems like his shoulders are broader than last year. He had a couple nice passes and nice boards.
JVB--didn't really seem that into the game. He had his moments, but you could definitely tell when he was trying and when he wasn't. He was also bothered by his ankle.
Pomlee--I was not impressed with his play last week, but he did better this week. He hit some shots and made some offensive moves. He also rebounded pretty well. It is good to see his game is developing....but it is still pretty raw.
Garrett--made a couple threes but he also missed his share. He finished on most of his drives (he did that last year in the CCL too). He had some real nice passes. So far, his game doesn't look much different than how it ended last season. Off the court, you can really tell he is one of the leaders on the team.
Palo--I was a big Cam Lee fan and I think I am going to be a big Bubu fan too. One reason.....he took a charge tonight. I think that is the first time I have seen that in a CCL game. He also had some nice penetrations and made some outside shots. He is a bit undersized.
Buckley--his team is much better when he is on the court. He is in charge with the ball and works to get the rest of his team involved. He made a couple nice outside shots and came up with a nice steal. He looks so much more comfortable out there than he did last year!
For you Drake fans....Nick Grant played well. He was strong taking it to the rim. Nobody else caught my eye.

Its is bothersome that DG cannot hit 3s in the CCL.

NHL teams need to be added to the favorite teams section. -

Re: 6/24 - Capitol City League
Its very apparent he should not be shooting 3's. DG shouldn't be shooting 3's unless the shot clock is running down or a half court shot at the end of half.

Then he should not be playing next season. If you can't hit a 3, then you can't be on the court at the same time as CB. CB is going to be double teamed every time he touches the ball. He will need 3 point shooters on the court at all times to keep the defenses honest.

Not everyone on the floor needs to be able to hit a three. Diante has a great knack for finding a way to the hoop, just has trouble finishing sometimes. I think he will continue to get better as that as he is becoming a seasoned college basketball player, and will make better decisions. I always thought he was too hesitant when he drove to the hoop, that should start to go away now as a Junior.
We will have other three point shooters on the floor.
