Staiger Makes German National Team At European Championships
AMES, Iowa- Iowa State junior guard Lucca Staiger is competing for the German A1 National Team at the European Basketball Championships, Sept. 7-20 in Poland. Staiger, a native of Blaustein, Germany, has played all summer on various German basketball teams. He was invited to the A1 tryouts and survived the final cut.
His German squad lost yesterday to France, 70-65 in regular-season competition at the European Championships. France was led by NBA All-Stars Tony Parker and Ronny Turiaf, who scored 19 and 15 points, respectively. Staiger had one assist in three minutes of action. Germany will face Russia today.
It has been a busy summer for the Cyclone. Staiger played on the German U20 National team which competed at the World University Games in Belgrade, Serbia in June. He led his team in scoring at 13.4 points and made 21-55 from 3-point range (38.0 percent) in the tournament. He also represented his country at the Munster Cup and Netherlands Tournament.

Re: Staiger Makes German National Team At European Championships
Thanks for the update, Chris. Any idea how his knee is doing?
Given that most people think he wasn't playing with a 100% knee last year, i'm concerned that the level and amount of play he's done this summer could hurt the knee recovery or make it more likely to be re-injured this year. Does the coaching staff share any of this concern?

Re: Staiger Makes German National Team At European Championships
I still have to ask: how is it possible to miss over a month of school and still stay eligible? What professor/instructor would allow this?

Does it matter? Obviously they worked it out.

Bummer! Last time Lucca played on a court with multiple pro players, or at least those making more than expenses (I think Parker and Turiaf qualify for that) we lost him for a year!!!

I believe the NCAA has changed the rule. The last time it happened, they were on his team.

Dirk isn't playing for Germany.

There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old’s life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves Orcs. ~ John Rogers -

Hopefully this success doesn't change his mind and make him want to play professionally over there. I won't be totally comfortable until he shows up on campus.

He won't miss any tests, he can get the notes from other sources.... and he likely has already arranged this in advance considering he is a basketball player.
I had classes at ISU that I never attended a single lecture in and just showed up for tests that I got As or Bs in. If you learn the material you are fine in some classes, even if you have no idea what the professor looks like.

Re: Staiger Makes German National Team At European Championships
I just hope come mid-February he doesn't emotionally burn out on BB, or physically break down. Hopefully he gets a little break here soon...
