The AMA disagrees. As does medical and scientific consensus.

I suppose STDs aren't really diseases either, right? Since you have control....

Re: Good article on Eustachy and Gillespie
The 2000 AP and USBWA National Coach of the Year hasn't coached in the NCAA tournament since 2001, and in six years he has yet to take Southern Miss to a postseason event of any kind.
Wow, think about this for a second...

Re: Good article on Eustachy and Gillespie
You can't go to the store and by some cancer. You can go to the store and buy alchohol.
You can chose to stay home or go out and drink. You can't decide not to have cancer.
They can rehab you if you are an alchoholic. A lot of cancer they can't do anything with.
So comparing alchoholism to cancer is freakin rediculous.
I love Larry though. Probably one of my favorite coaches ever.

Re: Good article on Eustachy and Gillespie
I don't think LE is comparing alcoholism to cancer...he doesn't say, "alcoholism is like cancer"...what he's saying is people make jokes about alcoholics when alcoholism has the ability to destroy lives as well as cancer.
For instance, herpes is a disease and people make fun of people with herpes all the time...does herpes destroy lives? I would say no...but if herpes caused millions of deaths nobody would be joking about it.
Alcoholism kills people and destroys the lives of family members of alcoholics...LE was saying something like that should not be joked about.

Just sayin'. That might be true but with some types with cancer, regardless of choice and behavior, you willl still get cancer. The same can't be said of alcoholism. I understand being predisposed but that's just like obesity which is also a lifestyle in many instances. In most cases it's all about choice.

Alcoholism is very much a disease, an alcoholic who is able to stay sober is still an alcoholic.

Re: Good article on Eustachy and Gillespie
I think some are missing the point of what he said. He didn't say one was worse than the other. Both are diseases, cancer and alcoholism are diseases. People don't laugh at other people with cancer, why should they laugh at people with another disease, alcoholism?
People don't ask for alcoholism just as much as people don't ask for cancer. If you think alcoholism is so easy to control... wow, I wish I could go through life as naive as you are.
