Wow, big drop off in votes from #8 to #9. Hard to argue that list. It's about where I would have it in the preseason.

Missouri seemed to get the benefit of the doubt from the coaches in this poll as they lost some very important elements of their team from last year (Carroll & Lyons in particular). Who do they have that can fill their shoes? Carroll also provided some intangibles as well as their emotional leader.

Carroll was the absolute perfect fit of height and agility for Mike's defense.
Any bigger or slower, there's no way he could keep up, any smaller and opposing big men would easily have had their way. He will be awfully tough to replace.

Eaton of OSU has those tough to replace intagibles as well.

Kansas State will win some and they will get outcoached also. I would slide them down the list based on coaching alone. Probably around 7th. I would also put them at number one for team the is about to get on probation for something the coaching staff did.

We can play with.

I also think this should be a reality this year for the Clones: Beat CU, Neb, and Missouri every time we play.....6 wins in Conf. right there.

I'm very disappointed the coaches have us picked to finish 8th. The cold hard facts are the coaches usually get it close to right. Last year they picked us to finish 11th and we finished 10th. The year before we were also picked to finish 11th and we ended 11th.

Last year the coaches picked the following finish: (1) Oklahoma; (2) Texas; (3) Baylor and Kansas tie; (5) Texas A&M; (6) Oklahoma State; (7) Missouri; (8) K-State; (9) Nebraska; (10) Texas Tech; (11) ISU; and (12) Colorado. The end finish was: (1) Kansas; (2) Oklahoma; (3) Missouri; (4) K-State; (5) Texas; (6) Texas A&M; (7) Oklahoma State; (8) Nebraska; (9) Baylor; (10) ISU; (11) Texas Tech; and (12) Colorado.

There is just so much hype about the team this year within Iowa but obviously not that way amongst the Big XII Coaches or nationally. Should we temper our expectations? I don't know. I'm still cautiously optimistic.

I have to agree. I can understand pre-season FB publications like Athlon's, etc never giving ISU credit, and even pre-season Big 12 coaches had no real reason to pick us anywhere but last (in FB); but I would have expected the Big 12 coaches to look at our MBB returning players and new additions and see the potential in this team. It simply isn't that hard to keep up on the pluses and minuses of a program since you are usually talking about 2-3 kids per team. Kind of depressing that they still see a bottom tier squad (or an underachieving coach).

Oh well, just have to prove them wrong.

you may want to re-read your post. Other than a few teams, the coaches weren't even close!

also, last year FOUR teams finished 9-7 and one team 8-8. If you think you can correctly predict the order when its that close (previous seasons have had 6-7 teams within 1-2 games) be my guest...

last year the big12 sent SIX teams to the dance, went 6-0 in the first round, and all those teams have talent returning + stud recruiting classes. its tough to leap frog all those teams in preseason predictions.

if anything, the coaches think much more highly of ISU than the media (most preseasons mags had us 9th), especially considering Brackins was unanimous first team all conference and gilstrap best newcomer.

Looking at last years, I certainly wouldn't say the coaches get it close to right, at least not to the point that I am worried they have us 8th.

UT - picked 2nd finished 5th
Baylor - picked 3rd finished 9th
Mizzou - picked 7th finished finished 3rd
KState - picked 8th finished 4th

If they are picking us around 8th, I would be more than happy with a jump to a 4th place finish ala KState last year. From what I have seen around here, most people are just hoping to be in the top half, and even the Kool-Aid drinkers are at maybe 4th place. Based on last years poll, such a jump from the preseason to finish is pretty reasonable.

For the record Fizers Junior year they had us 10th.
Tinsley Senior year they had us 11th.

Just saying.

Honestly I hate to say it but I would be very surprised to see KSU out of the top 5. Pullen and Clemente are very, very good players, and Martin has finished 3rd and 4th in the Big 12 in his two years. They got some great recruits coming and will be solid.
