Re: Hilton is pathetic
It is looking pretty ratty on the outside these days.

Re: Hilton is pathetic
That was supposed to be taken care of with the addition of the practice facility. Since the PF got moved away from Hilton, all the renovations/repairs got put on hold.
Don't confuse hope for a plan. -
Re: Hilton is pathetic
It definately is in need of some serious repairs/upkeep. I hope that it will happen soon before it is too late. We certainly don't want to be faced with serious structural issues that require complete reconstruction of the stairs, etc.

Let's just start small... and get some decent hot dogs in that place. Good Lord, those things are awful.

Re: Hilton is pathetic
I guess I haven't noticed these things, but I'm sure JP is well aware of them if they are serious issues. You can see what he is doing though.....the first things he has placed a priority on investing in is to create assets (new suites at Jack Trice). Then the money flowing in there can fund such repairs that you mention. Or, he could raise money with parking too. I like the direction we're headed though.

Re: Hilton is pathetic
They must plan on replacing it soon, otherwise some patching would/should have been done.
I would like to see some more color inside - maybe painting some of the walls cardinal like they did at Trice. The bare concrete isn't flattering.
Walking on water is easy. Just do it in December when it's frozen. -

Couldn't agree more. It's not like hot dogs are expensive. The pretzels are crap as well. They make a good chew toy for a dog.
People will pay for good concessions. The lines at the ice cream and pizza stands were a mile long today even before the half ended.

Clone Cone's are amazing also...
Concerning the maintenance around Hilton... I have also noticed it starting to fall apart (the concrete around the steps and raised walkways). As far as Hilton itself, it seems to be fine.

Re: Hilton is pathetic
I actually was going to start a thread about this exact topic when i saw this. Definitely something that should be fixed. The south stairs and walkway are the main entry for most fans into the arena, and it looks like its just falling apart.

Re: Hilton is pathetic
I've noticed the appearance flaws for a while. A lot of missing lights, crumbly concrete posts, potholes, etc.
The part that it the worst is the small steel under the handrail. There are spots where the steel is wabbly and there are spots where it is completely missing. A small child could easily fall between that 3 feet gap and die. There wasn't caution tape over one area today at all. There are reasons there are OSHA guidelines and crappy appearance aside, it looks like ISU is breaking the law.

Re: Hilton is pathetic
The Iowa State Center is still owned by the University. Three of the buildings (Scheman, C.Y. Stephens, and Fisher) are operated by a private contractor through an arrangement with the University. Hilton is operated by the Athletic Department. As far as maintenance goes, most of that should come out of what used to be called Physical Plant, and I believe is now named the Facilities Planning and Management Department of the University. They are responsible for all building maintenance, and that should include the parking lots. I'm not sure why the work has not been done, unless it is simply a lack of funds.
Sorry to hear that the walkways have not been kept in good condition, but then Stephens is 40 years old this year, and Hilton will be in a couple of years. I guess it should not be too surprising that some outside work needs to be done.

Originally Posted by Dryburn I'm not sure why the work has not been done, unless it is simply a lack of funds. Me neither. Lack of funds doesn't excuse missing middle horizontal rungs on handrail. Taking a couple thousand bucks to fix that stuff would save them the millions that a lawsuit costs and yes I mean millions. What court room wouldn't give that to them for the death of a two year old?
I saw two spots right by each other, one with caution tape blowing in the wind and one spot where there was nothing, just nothing under that cement handrail.
