Did Tim Floyd steer Kirk Hinrich to Kansas?
Since Larry Eustachy got the ISU job largely based on Tim Floyd's recommendation, and since the two are long-time friends, I had always assumed that Floyd would have urged Kirk Hinrich to play for Larry and ISU even after he left for the Bulls.
But according to Roy Williams in his new book, that wasn't the case:
"I was in Las Vegas recruiting, and when I pulled into the parking lot, Tim Floyd pulled up beside me. He said, 'I am going to take the Bulls job. Michael Jordan, as you know, is saying he's quitting. Is there any way you could convince him to let me talk to him? I'd really appreciate it.'
'I'll do everything I can,' I said, 'but I don't think he's going to play.'
I got Tim's number, and as I started walking away, he said, 'Roy, let me tell you something else, too. When I go to the Bulls, Iowa State is going to lose a commitment from a kid from Sioux City who is a Kansas player if I've ever seen one.' 'Is it the Hinrich kid?' 'Yeah, you would love him. Just watch him while you're out here.'
So we watched Kirk for the next three days, and fell in love with him. All of a sudden I was recruiting Nick Collison, Drew Gooden, and Kirk Hinrich." -

Thanks Tim, *******.
I'd rather have had Tinsley anyway.

Wouldn't really surprise me all that much. I loved Floyd, but I don't think he had all that much allegiance to ISU. If he could further his career by buddying up to Roy, I can see him do it.
At same time.... pretty sure Roy has a forked tongue.

Wow. It always amazes me what goes on "behind the scenes." Looks like Roy's book might be an interesting read.

KH to ISU means no Tinsley at ISU. I think all of us would agree Tinsley > Kirk Hinrich.
No sour grapes here as far as I'm concerned.

NOT COOL on Tim Floyd's part. NOT COOL AT ALL.

No sour grapes here as far as I'm concerned. The thing that pisses me off is I always liked Floyd and thought he cared about our program a little.

Utah Utes, Illinois Illini. The University of Pennsylvania thought about following this pattern by calling themselves the Pennsylvania Pencils. However, they were afraid their students would start chanting "We're No. 2" -
Re: Did Tim Floyd steer Kirk Hinrich to Kansas?
I knew a couple people pretty close to the situation and after Floyd left, Kirk opened it back up again and looked at ISU, KU and OU. Supposedly it came down to KU and OU in the end and Kirk actually favored OU. Guess he liked the relationships between coaches and players the best there. In the end he didn't want to play that far from his family. His sister was at KU and if you remember his dad retired briefly and then took a h.s. job in KC.
I defended Kirk back then since he verballed after his sophomore year and the coach who recruited him left before he graduated from h.s. Take that for what its worth but back then, none of us had ever heard of this Eustachy dude.

We are making a huge assumption that good 'ole crying Roy is telling the story correctly. Nonetheless, I agree, Timmy was probably in it for himself in most cases. Still remains our best game coach of all time.
Clone to the Bone with the up and coming IOWA STATE. -
Re: Did Tim Floyd steer Kirk Hinrich to Kansas?
Not that I don't hate Roy, but I prefer to blame the Bulls. Besides Floyd's fame is more tied to breaking up casino fights and paying Mayo, and having his teeth kicked in, in the NBA, than his success at ISU.

I don't understand why people are so ******, it'd be one thing if he said to Hinrich, "You should check out Kansas and go there" as it was he was asking a favor and giving a little one tip in return.

Re: Did Tim Floyd steer Kirk Hinrich to Kansas?
So basically he told Roy about Kirk just so he could get Roy to call Jordan for him. Nice Tim. Way to look out for your boy.
Nobody but HB knows for sure. You pretty much know nothing....like Knownothing would like to say.
