He has already said that he was off on his initial assessment of what kind of players to recruit. I think that set us back an additional year despite the turmoil...
One of my major "criticisms" of GMac before was him playing too slow. I understand he didn't have the athletes but I can't tell you how many times we beat a guy off the dribble to only stop and not take it to the hoop.
It's almost a godsend this year seeing them actually take it to the basket instead of being timid about it.
It's definitely a much more fun team to watch. I look forward to going to each game no matter who the competition is this year. I'm thankful to not be a hawkeye basketball fan. Even in our slow years, we weren't as boring to watch as they are under Lickliter.
Jiri was not going to run the floor, at least not for very long. In order to do what we do, the big man has to run the floor just as well, if not better than anyone else.
McDermott actually addressed this in the call in show on Monday. He said that in his first year he had a team that could run, but it wasn't deep enough.
Also, this slow down crap is kind of off. If you watch our team the last 3 years, it wasn't like McDermott was ever opposed to them running. He just wanted them to be smart about it.
I do not think GMAC always wanted to play as slow as we did when he first got here, I think he saw it has our best chance to win with the athletes we had. He has done things the right way and those first three years were tough to go through, but it seems to be worth it for the success we will see this year.
This is the trio I absolutely can't wait to watch more of...
3 big bodies, all that can run and hit shots from anywhere on the floor. That has to be one of the more athletic/versatile trio of front-court players in the nation.
I know I'm way ahead of things here, but I was really worried before the year about next year just because of who will probably lose. However, with guys like Garrett, Dendy, Lucca, SC, Ham, and Colvin back with the athletes we have coming in we might not be a tourney team, but I don't see us regressing like I originally feared.
