I think some people have argued that because of the signs and general stifling of some stuff, that no one cheers unless it's lead now, but I cannot attest to that first hand.
Seeing as how CA encourages conformity though, I could see it a little. That stems from the over all culture though, not just CAC's actions in leading cheers

Playing language and fashion police, not so much. How about putting the shield down and acknowledging that hey, something things work and somethings could use fixing.
Just because your sister helped create it doesn't mean it can't use a little tweaking after working in the real world. Trial and Error are part of creating successful things. Putting your head in the sand saying everything is peachy and we're a bunch of nay-sayers is just as bad as saying everything about CA is terrrible and pro-CA people are horrible. I'm not saying everything is peachy clean. I have not seen language police the past 2 years, and have sat in the front 2 rows at tons of games, I'm sure they realized that no matter what you do, you can't control what people say.
But I have witnessed the fashion police, and I have some mixed feelings about that. Yes, its great that this person came to the game, but the shirts are used for a reason and I feel if one person is let in for that, that others will want to and it will defeat the purpose of having matching shirts, and I think the shirt thing is great.

For the life of me, I can't figure out the shirt criticism. There's no arguing that it looks better, and if students are staying away from the game because they don't want to wear the same shirt more than once in a single week, then I don't think they're the kind of wild and crazy fans that would bring Hilton Magic back, anyway.

Saying everyone wear a cardinal shirt would also be completely fine. Include the CA fee in ticket prices, tell people to wear a cardinal shirt. Voila! Not difficult. I'd even venture to say don't let people not in cardinal shirts sit down there. What Iowa State student doesn't have a cardinal shirt? Makes tickets transferable, you don't lose much visual appeal, and everyone is still happy.

It makes tickets a ***** to transfer. I had 3 friends tonight with exams (professors who had exams tonight, **** off) but we couldn't bring 3 different people with us because we didn't have shirts, and I'm not giving up a second row seat so I can sit with a couple of my other friends in the upper deck. Does it look nice? Yeah it does. Is it necessary? No.

Does it look nice? Yeah it does. Is it necessary? No. That I can get on board with. One of my old roommates who attends another school for his MBA was in town tonight for the game and tried to get in with last year's Cyclone Alley shirt to no avail. He was able to get in by entering through another section, but still, somewhat of a hassle.
But again -- if your three friends with exams tonight were able to give their tickets to other people, do you think the students would have been much more into the game and this thread wouldn't exist? Or do you think the fans that get wild and crazy aren't the type who get tickets from other students who have an obligation?

As a highschool student, i'd come to the games here pretty often and never once was the crowd then like they are today. Maybe it's just are generation.

I think one person had a lot more to do with that than others, and I have a special place in my hatred of CAC for that person. A lot of negative things I have to say about CAC are directed in that direction. Yes I am guilty of painting with too big of a brush sometimes Originally Posted by bigcyfan82 But I have witnessed the fashion police, and I have some mixed feelings about that. I love the idea. I wish everyone would wear the same color, to football and basketball. But you would be very hard pressed to deny that it has hurt attendance, especially the year things transitioned from CA/Students to CA only. JP expanded the size of the student section because things had been selling out, then CA failed to fill even the origional section. I don't think that is due to just the team
It's a great idea, as a hard core fan I love but there are clearly issues with it and it would be good to see something done about it besides just shoving them in the balcony.
Creating a visitor section in CA, loaning or selling extra shirts, or at least easying up on the shirt policy when the parquet isn't full. Make CA part of the student ticket price so everyone has a shirt. I dunno, ideas are out there, experiment with them

The problem with simply requiring a cardinal colored shirt is Iowa State has about 8 different colored "cardinal" shirts. It'd look like we tried to organize it, but failed miserably. I think we either need to require a specific shirt or just require the student ticket.

This is also why you give out a shirt with each ticket, so that atleast the majority of the fans have the same red. Require others to have red period. An off shade of red is less noticable than a bright green or pink shirt.
If you consistently make your Cyclone Alley shirts the same color, allow previous years shirts, combined with a current ticket, to come in. As you go through school you acquire more shirts and can loan the proper color to people.
Buying the current shirt has never been about anything other than getting people to pay dues for Cyclone Alley (technically maybe other things, practically, just this)
Make it part of the student ticket price, this becomes a non-issue.

Note I was saying allow red shirts in general, especially previous year's CA shirts, and make the price of the current year's shirt part of the ticket price so you aren't worried about people buying a shirt freshman year and never paying the price of CA again, which is probably the biggest concern right now

Re: Time To End Cyclone Alley!
When you see the game in TV there really is no difference between the different shades of cardinal. I think they should drop the CA membership and allow first come first serve to anyone wearing cardinal in that area. It works for football where the best fans get there early and get the front spots.

Re: Time To End Cyclone Alley!
So I have been reading fanatic for a couple of years but this thread made me have to get an account.
I was a former CAC member. I served last year and also this year until I got an internship with another company. Here is some food for thought
1.) CAC has absolutely no control of where the student section is. Talk to the athletic department about that. We have brought up moving the section to the sides of the court but the response has been that the student section does not bring enough people in the non-conference games. So come to ALL the games and maybe they will consider it.
2.) We never forced you to do any "cheers". You don't wanna do a free throw distraction don't do it. We never limit your creativity at all. Look at gorilla man or those dendy's den guys. We let them do their thing. So go for it, be creative, shout something creative. The only rule we have, which is more of an ethical rule, is nothing in really bad taste.
3.) Guess what? The students are the same whether or not they are wearing a red shirt or not. If we didn't stress wearing the shirt, when nationally televised games came, the student section would look terrible. Also, think of CA as a product. It's not fair to let some people in for free (not wearing a shirt) and for some people to pay for the product (people in CA).
I agree, if I had absolute power, I would make CA part of the Athletics Department and include the price in the student season tickets.
4.) Most of you think CAC's main responsiblity is to "cheerlead" the crowd. no. Our main goal is to get sponsors to get us props and roadtrips and other events. Most of you do not understand where the money comes from, because trust me, not much of it comes from membership fees.
