Cy should get a good boost in the RPI
Of course the big jump will come from actually getting a win on the ROAD! Big props and worth bonus points in the RPI. Nice job guys.
but on top of that. Iowa finally won a game, and if they jump above 150 in the RPI we will lose the penalty for playing too many cupcakes. We really need the squaks to get off the cupcake list.
Northwestern beat up purdue, too.
Other little bonuses, Bradley, Creighton and UNI all won. And Texas won again, but that will even out later in the season.
All in all a good day around the basketball world for the Cyclones' RPI.

All in all a good day around the basketball world for the Cyclones' RPI. I was looking at our SOS rating and I was shocked. It is at 164 and we have played 4 teams that have a rpi in the top 25, including the team currently at #1.

RPI is as big of a joke as the BCS.

At least with Basketball, we allow others to prove they deserve it more than a computer picked #1 or #2.

The computer parts of the BCS tend to do a good job of picking, it's the human parts that screw it up.
There is no human part of the RPI, although it doesn't technically have anything to do with who is selected for the Dance. It has historically done a good job of predicting among the top 40 or so.

The problem is that we played a lot of teams that are REALLY bad. This has been a problem for teams wanting to get into the tourney before. Our Non Conference SOS was 11th in the Big 12. We have a lot of wins over teams in the 250+ RPI range.
Our SOS and in turn our RPI will probably be a little lower all year than some of our peers because of this. One reason why every win is so precious right now.

Maybe, but just like the BCS it plays a part in who is selected to the NCAA tournament, and that ain't no joke.

Maybe, but just like the BCS it plays a part in who is selected to the NCAA tournament, and that ain't no joke. Yup. And some of the teams that we were looking at to beef up our schedule probably aren't ranked as highly as we'd hoped (see Bradley and Houston, especially).

That has been the killer. I thought, before the season, that we had a rather exciting non-conference schedule coming up. We played some good teams, and some teams that were supposed to be good. Can't be helped if they aren't or weren't. That just means that we need to go 10-6 or 9-7 in-conference, rather than 8-8 or 7-9. These guys can do it.

And we're the North Dakota State Champions. Those weren't the best teams. But everybody's got some of them.

Re: Cy should get a good boost in the RPI
I do agree that we play too many "double cupcakes", just horrible teams with an RPI over 250 or even 300+. but you have to pay the bills. and the real big hit that is hurting ISU right now is how aweul Iowa is.
The schedule was made so that we were playing a maximum of cupcakes with out getting the "getting fat" rpi penalty. If you play more that half of your non conf against 150+ you get an additional penalty component. We fall in the getting fat category because we didn't schedule in any margin for error.
Iowa was not expected to be good, but we also didn't expect them to be on the official cupcake list. I think that they are the major bugaboo. If they can get their rpi over 150+ we get off the "fat schedule" list and loose that penalty.
I find it funny that people who lack the capacity to grasp statistical correlation call the RPI a failure. It is not an end all be all, but it is an excellent tool. No one would ever like to get it down to deciding anything important nor should anyone argue that it should, and that is where the BCS has got it wrong. Its a great tool, because it is so objective. Rules can be manipulated, but at least they are consistent. The problem only really comes when you try and whittle it down to two teams.

How much would we jump if we are off the penalty list or how many spots is the penalty hurting us for? Any idea?

Re: Cy should get a good boost in the RPI
We actually got a pretty big boost today in RPI. Yesterday before the game we were 131, now we are 108. Probably need to get around 50 before the year ends.

Should jump up some more with Kansas coming in here next weekend.
