Reason #1- I think Pollard will give him that chance.

Reason #2- He can't afford not to.

I personally think he deserves one more year. I may be in the minority, but barring a complete collapse, I think he gets it.

But then, he deserves a chance the year after next year too. Since next year is rebuilding year and expectations should be lowered.

I'm a big fan of McDermott, and I didn't say that.

I agree he will likely get another year, but for what? Do we really think things will turn around next year? Do we really want to be searching for a coach at the same time as Iowa (presumably after next season as well)? Why not get a fresh start now?

Here is my input...the only thing that is going to make me think he deserves to be here is if he beats a ranked team and finishes .500 in the conference. And i do not see that happening i mean you guys argue he is a good coach but if the man cant even beat a ranked team in his 4 years at iowa state then he needs to be gone. I mean we have the talent, an arena where we rarely lose at home so a fan base that supports us, and we have 2 nba caliber players. But yet we have not beaton a ranked team is discusting.

If this team does not make the tourney this year; short of the entire current team coming back next year, alot of support will be lost for McDermott next year shall he return, myself included.

I expect him to be back next year if for no reason other than the AD can't afford to buy him out AND hire a new coach and staff.

He still has 13 games plus at least one Big 12 tournament game to prove himself THIS season, which a lot of people seem to be forgetting or ignoring.

lets see if he can actually out coach another big 12 coach instead of rely on talent, Coaching wins close games and well look at this team, cant hit free throws which can be coached, cannot rebound which can be coached, cannot play defense which can be coached...hmm how do we change these things because they have been a problem during the entire mcdermott era. WE NEED A NEW COACH

No you didn't say that. But I did. I think the time has come to say goodbye.
But if we are to bring him back, then next year will simply not provide him with a fair chance.

Hard to say, as everything has to be taken as a total package, in context. 5 or less Big 12 wins, followed by more player defections? That might be my baseline, but as I said, context is everything.
