Was their an ISU MBB game that hooked you as a lifelong fan?
CR has a good topic being discussed right now about whether there was a certain game or performance that hooked you as a Cyclone basketball fan for life. I thought it was good (and a positive thread regarding basketball), so I stole and brought it here. So, let's hear it fanatics!
here is mine:
I was a freshman at ISU in 1995. I went to ISU, but had been a hawk fan throughout childhood. I had parquet-level seats for the Iowa @ ISU game that year. I went into that game primarily a hawk fan, and walked out on my way to being a diehard Cyclone fan. Hilton Magic grabbed ahold of me and I have never looked back. Since then, my love for the Cyclones has grown immensely, while any fanhood I ever had for Iowa completely disappeared and became hatred.
I'll never forget the furious comeback by the Cyclones that fell just short of shocking a highly ranked Iowa team. Dedric Willougby was on fire that game!

Prepare to receive criticism on the title.

Re: Was their an ISU MBB game that hooked you as a lifelong fan?
the game against Texas when Bodicker missed the two free throws to win it. I had been a diehard cyclone my whole life but that was the first game I was able to go to. Had nosebleed seats, and when he was shooting those two free throws I could feel the place shaking
"We embrace that challenge and what it presents to us. I’m going to approach all 12 games this way: We’re going to win them all. If we prepare and then go out and execute, we’re going to win all 12. Now how many are we going to end up with at the end of the year? I don’t know, and you’re right, I won’t put a number on it."- Paul Rhoads on having the toughest schedule in the Big 12 -

1987 - My dad brought my brother and me down to Ames for our first game ever - ISU v. Iowa. LaFester Rhodes.
There are worse ways to break into fanaticsm.

The day I stepped foot on ISU's campus as a student I became a lifelong fan of ALL ISU sports!

waynes victory at #2 kansas with stinson, blaylock, clark, and homan
"Day after day, situation after situation you do things the right way. If you do things the right way, in life, you are going to be successful. I'm not just your football coach; I'm not just here to win games. I could not be prouder of who we are and who we are becoming, together. You do things right in the classroom, off and on the field; that's whats's makes us Cyclones and that's what our culture's all about."

Lafester for 52? against Iowa
Jeff Hornecek and Grayer run in the '86? Tourney. Jeff's buzzer beater vs. Ron Harper and Miami (Ohio).
Jeff Grayer playing against W. Tisdale and Danny Manning in the Big 8
Side note: When Bill Self was at Illinois and I lived in central Illinois at the time, a reporter was interviewing Bill Self and asked him about his days at Kansas and the Big 8. He mentions the great players of the Big 8 at the time. He mentions Danny Manning, Wayman Tisdale, and Jeff Grayer all in the same group along with a couple of others. Thats how good Grayer was.

Great Post Quesion to get back on a positive vibe. It was the Elite 8 team in 99-00. I had never been to a game before, just watched a lot on TV. My dad bought tickets for me and my 2 brothers to go. My brothers were quite a bit older than me and we had never really done anything like it. They nosebleed seats in the top row of Hilton, but it was fantastic. We sealed the Big 12 title that day, and the game ended with the whole house rockin saying "1 More Year" to Fizer for what seemed like 15 minutes straight. It was awesome. One of my greatest memories of being with my dad.
No matter how good you are, you're going to lose one-third of your games. No matter how bad you are you're going to win one-third of your games. It's the other third that makes the difference. ~Tommy Lasorda

Final Big 8 Championship game, 1996. Suck it, KU.

grew up in eastern Iowa a Clone fan
saw many more Hawk games (all on TV)
after I saw Stevens light up Knight's Hoosier
I started listening to the clones on the radio
instead of watching the Hawks.

I can't remember a specific game, but I just remember getting hooked by listening to Pete and Eric call the games when they were talking about Terrance Allen, Ron Harris, Barry Stevens and Ron Virgil, and then listening to Johnny during the postgames. There's certainly a mystique and connection that goes with listening to stuff like that on the radio that you can't get anywhere else, especially with top notch people like those two. -

Going up to minneapolis for the tourney when we had Fizer, Tinsley, Nurse, Horton etc....#2 seed and should have been the #1 seed overall and we played a close game round 1 and 2 and everyone that was nuetral was rooting against us for an upset and we made it to the elite 8. Tough to name a game since there is so many ones i remember though that i could say is num 1. Hoiberg single handily beating KU was a good one too. F. U. KU rock chalk Jayhawk that game

I'm pretty sure I had no choice but to be a Cyclone due to my parents being huge fans but these guys are the first era of Cyclones I remember following. I was pretty young but was already hooked.
My dad passed away about a year ago and while going through some of his things, I found the DM Register from the day after Lafesters big game. The headline read fa la la la la Lafester Rhodes (sp) because it was right around xmas. It was pretty cool because I have memories of watching that game.
The only bigger turnoff than finding out a woman smokes, is finding out she's a Husker fan.
